Many people in Bristol have pledged themselves to do collective direct action & civil disobedience in the event of war on Iraq. It would be helpful if others understood what these 'pledgers' were trying to do, knew the best
ways to support them, & for these 'pledgers' themselves to gain more experience in order to effectively spike the UK war effort.
SO EVERYONE WHO DOES IT IS GOING TO GET ARRESTED? Not
necessarily. Part of the training involves how to build support groups of 2 or more people - 'affinity groups'. Each group will include people who are prepared to be arrested, & others who take photos, act as legal observers,
hold banners, work on de-fusing unpleasant situations, or look after the sandwiches.
WHY AFFINITY GROUPS? This is a well-tried tactic on big demo's - especially where the police seem likely to wade in heavily, but even where you know they won't. It means that people can look out for one another, look after one another, & help to defuse any potentially threatening situations. It's a way of building solidarity.
WHAT'S THE MAIN POINT OF THIS TRAINING? It's a way of getting people to think about issues of non-violence & violence, about what they personally are prepared for, & prepared to do, in various situations. It's all aimed at getting people to think about situations, to gain clarity & self-confidence through being prepared beforehand, & knowing where they stand.
IS THERE LEGAL ADVICE INCLUDED? There is a component explaining basic rights of assembly, the law on obstruction, your rights before, during, & after arrest, & related matters . This can give a great deal of reassurance, particularly to people who've never done direct action before. Refusing to comply with police orders can be an empowering thing when you're prepared for what the consequences are.

2) STOP THE CITY ON THE OUTBREAK OF WAR
We call upon everyone to converge at the Peace Vigil on the evening following* the 'official' outbreak of war with Iraq. Preparations for war intensify with each day that passes. Our response is to build our movement day by day, & to shut down our city on the outbreak of war.
A national 1 hour stoppage at work is also suggested on the day following the outbreak of war, as well as a 'sick' day to engage in civil disobedience for those for who so choose. (*As it may take some hours to confirm the 'official' start to war, you will be sent an email confirming when the Bristol coalition considers war to have 'officially' begun.)
*******Peace Vigil open-ended on the outbreak of War*******

Ramsey Clarke, the former UN Attorney General to the US, has issued charges of Crimes Against Humanity against George Bush Senior. These charges relate to crimes committed against the people of Iraq following the UN deadline of Jan 15th 1991, as the date for Iraq to pull out of Kuwait. By 28th Feb 1991 the US had flown 110,000 aerial sorties, & dropped 88,500 tons of explosives on Iraq (the equivalent of 7 l/2 Hiroshima bombs).
Further Info:  http://www.iacenter.org/rcun.htm
THE INFO BELOW outlines the severe overkill committed against the people of Iraq, & outlines the role of the U.S Attorney General.
"(The Gulf War) devastated water systems from reservoir, pumping station to kitchen faucet as well as urban sewage & sanitation systems. Food production, processing, storage & distribution were widely destroyed. Poultry was nearly wiped out by loss of electricity & lack of grain. Animal
herds were decimated. Fertilizer & insecticide plants were destroyed. Communications systems, telephone, radio & TV were shattered. Transportation was badly battered. Electric power was knocked out across the nation in the first 24 hours. Petroleum production, refining, storage & distribution were attacked across the nation." Ramsey Clarke.

PEACE VIGIL TIMES : Mon-Fri 5:30-6:30pm & Sat 3:00-4:00pm
(City Centre. Opposite the Hippodrome. St.Augustines Parade)
DAYS OFF: New Years Eve, New Years Day.

b) WEEKLY MEETING: We hold a meeting every week on Thursday: 6.45-8.15pm @ St.Mary On The Quay Hall. City Centre. Colston Ave/Zed Alley (opposite the Cenotaph). Everyone's welcome to attend. Please come along to give your input, to provide ideas, & to help arrange events.

5) NEWS : NORTH KOREA........
Full Story:  http://www.counterpunch.org/nimmo1227.html
North Korea, part & parcel of the Dubya declared axis of evil, has torn the seals off its mothballed nuke plants, much to the dismay of the US, South Korea, & the International Atomic Energy Agency. The assumption is the
sinister Stalinists in Pyongyang will start making nuclear bombs. North Korea has over 300 Nodong-x missiles, which can reach Japan & Okinawa. It has a thousand Scud-B/C missiles, capable of hitting South Korea. Most worrisome for Bush & Clan, it has Taepodong-x ICBMs, which can reach all the way across the Pacific and hit Los Angeles, San
Francisco, San Diego, & even Chicago. Be afraid.
Not to worry, though. Intrepid Donald Rumsfeld to the rescue. The prickly Secretary of Defense confidently told the world earlier this week the US can wage two wars at once, no problem. 'We are capable of winning decisively in one, & swiftly defeating in the case of the other,' he insisted. 'Let there be no doubt about it.' No, there's no doubt, especially considering Bush has warned the US will use nukes in response to 'surprising military developments,' as spelled out in the Pentagon's Nuclear
Posture Review (NPR). The recent behaviour of North Korea should come as no surprise since the Bush NPR specifically targets not only North Korea, but also Russia, China, Libya, Syria, Iraq, & Iran.
The Bushites want to employ a 'flexible arsenal,' which is code for war-fighting with 'mini-nukes' designed to be used in regional conflicts. As if to demonstrate it is not fooling around, & will pull out all stops to annihilate
'rogue regimes,' the Bush administration has not only decided to throw deterrence to the wind, but will resume nuclear weapons explosions at the Nevada nuclear test site, has scornfully withdrawn from the ABM (Anti-Ballistic Missile) Treaty, & disrupted the work of the Biological Weapons Convention. All of this makes the assumed threat posed by North Korea & Iraq insignificant by way of comparison.
Now that Bush has drawn up his hit list & used colorful adjectives to describe his enemies, & has promised to use nukes against them if push comes to shove, we can likely expect these 'evildoers' to begin developing nuclear weapon programs of their own. In fact, Russia has helped Iran build two nuclear sites, including a heavy-water plant crucial for the production of a plutonium-based nuclear bomb. Commercial satellite photographs, according to the New York Times, reveal a separate facility for producing
highly enriched uranium. Iran, of course, may have what it considers good reason to develop nukes - less than friendly neighbour Israel is estimated to have around 200 ready-to-go nukes with the missiles to deliver them." Kurt Nimmo (Counterpunch 27/12/02)

6) NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION : 15th FEBRUARY
Further Details:  http://www.stopwar.org.uk
The next National Demonstration against the Invasion of Iraq will be held on Saturday 15th February. This event will be co-ordinated with Events & Demonstrations across the U.S, Europe, & the Wider World.
BRISTOL COACH DETAILS WILL FOLLOW SHORTLY.
Considering the devastation inflicted on Iraq 12 years ago (see VIGIL ACTIONS above), the 12 years of continuous bombing since then, & the 12 years of punitive sanctions (themselves responsible for the deaths of over 500,000 Iraqi children, according to UN figures), George Bush Senior's Crimes Against Humanity may well develop into acts of GENOCIDE aided by Bush Junior & Blair.

7) NEW GROUP: N.A.S.P.I.R
Network Of Activist Scholars, Politics & International Relations
VISIT:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/naspir/
DESCRIPTION: "At present, the academic discipline of politics & international relations in Britain primarily serves the function of diverting attention from or legitimating the oppression carried out by the elite of
which it is a part. The purpose of the Network is to promote British politics & international relations scholarship which supports non-violent action against oppression. The oppression may be domestic or international, & may take many forms, including physical violence or denial of economic, social, cultural or political rights. Those carrying out the oppression may
be states, corporations or other non-state actors. The work of the Network is likely to develop in terms of clusters of specialist groups on various topics – such as British foreign policy, anti-war & anti-militarist activities,
gender politics, the politics of the news media, the environment, democracy, & the relationships between academia & oppression. The Network welcomes non-academic activists, research students & taught course students as well as established scholars. An important objective of the Network is to ensure that those in academia come through their professional training with their activist values intact & are able to protect & promote those values in their professional lives. As what we choose to study & how we choose to study it are unavoidably political, the traditional academic pretence of neutrality is unsustainable."

8) VIEWS : BOYCOTT U.S GOODS & SERVICES
NOTE: Substantial opinion with the Anti-War Movement supports the use of a Boycott as a tool to stop the war, but is considered to be a blunt, & problematic instrument by others. The IDEA website, & the edited opinion below, argues the case for a Boycott of US goods & services.
Website:  http://members.cox.net/stopthewar/English.htm
"Everything we do to oppose the imminent U.S war is predicated on the apparent, massive popular opposition around the world to that war. In London 350,000 people filled the streets recently to express their opposition to the Blair government’s support for the war. In Germany,
Schroeder’s opposition to unilateral U.S. action against Iraq contributed to his recent electoral victory. If this massive level of popular opposition to the U.S war against Iraq is as real and growing as it appears to be, then we
believe there is a receptive audience for this boycott proposal.
The only way to affect the behaviour of the elites is to raise the social, political & economic costs to them. They make plain that they are impervious to political opposition to their war making. The massive British opposition to the war did little to dampen Blair’s enthusiasm for it. Blair &
Bush know they can wage a modern regional war before popular political opposition can grow & get organized. This is a serious problem for our usual anti-war tactics. This boycott strategy, on the other hand, would be effective both now, before the bombs start to fall, & after the war starts."

10) UPDATES : NATIONAL, BATH CITY & UWE
a) NATIONAL: Direct Action Against U.S Base: On the night of Sat 14th December night a number of peace activists attacked targets within the Menwith Hill spy base(Yorkshire) causing tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage. Menwith Hill is the intelligence hub for co-ordinating the war effort against Iraq & is totally unaccountable to people in the UK. Activists broke through the security fences & disabled key elements of the base's covert listening apparatus. The damage will severely limit the base's ability to intercept communications & cost the US thousands to repair.

11) RELATED CAMPAIGNS
These campaigns are not official campaigns of the coalition.
a) BOYCOTT THE EVENING POST : SALES FALL 6.4%
"The towel-heads will then spend their time dodging flying lumps of crackling & black pudding bombs while we roll down the road to Baghdad unimpeded," Evening Post (14th Aug 2002)
This is the response of the Bristol Muslim Cultural Society.
"The gravity of the offence caused can only be adequately articulated by asking one simple question: How much longer will the people of Bristol have to endure the personal prejudices of Barry Beelzebub, being habitually masqueraded within the pages of a trusted local family newspaper?" Farooq Siddique (BMCS).

b) HUMAN SHIELDS NEEDED FOR IRAQ
Below is an extract from the introductory statement of this UKSOCIETY campaign. They are quite seriously suggesting that people go to Iraq & act as human 'shields' against invasion. There are other non-direct ways this campaign needs help, but you should only consider supporting this campaign once you are entirely satisfied with the possible implications.
INFO:  uksociety@hotmail.com Tel: Holland 31(0)6 2220 4574
"If you are ready to join our action we need information that is required for Iraqi visas (full name, date of birth & nationality). Approval for our Human Shield Mission has been obtained by Iraqi officials. Having said that we say categorically that our action is not in support or supported by the Iraqi Government. This action was initiated by people who reject war & feel strongly enough to risk their own safety in defence of innocent Iraqi lives.
We request that you also write a short statement as to why you are joining this action. This is requested in the interest of negating the inevitable accusations that in doing this we are supporting Saddam Hussein. That is of course ridiculous but we cannot stop corporate media from saying it. Please take the time to do this, then we can expose corporate media for what they are if they try to associate our action with Saddam Hussein."
