What is this christmas thing?

redkop | 19.12.2002 12:02

Can anyone please inform me of the relevance of this christmas thing?

I will try once more to ask my question as my first article vanished from the site after publishing. Can anyone please inform me what this consumer and chemical induced euphoria everyone appears to be experiencing at present is all about?I fail to see the relivence of the poster i recently passed in a shop window proclaiming peace on earth to all!Is this just a sick sarcastic joke or do i simply not understand the message correctly. How does this message square with the fast approaching genocide of the poor people of Iraq? And why is everyone in a state of euphoria when normaly they all appear moronic and docile? Can anyone supply me with a serious answer to my questions? The world is once again on the verge of world war i fail to see the relivance of the populations euphoric state.

Why not stand on a street corner shouting at people about how stupid and docile they are? That'll change the world!

Muslims fast at Ramadan to show respect for their bodies and Maker.

Christians gorge on a glut of poisons to revere their Creator at Xmas.

Everyone is dumbed down with chemicals, so they don't understand they are being sucked into a consumer vortex.

BTW - Happy New War!

Why so much hostility to my questions it is not a street corner thing realy.Isimply ask what is christmas and nobody appears to have a clue.Hyde Park corner is not the place for asking questions but giving answers to them!Furthermore i honestly have no clue to what this christmas thing is about.People appear to be taking some kind of chemical stimulant at present.Walking around my local town people are usualy moronic and docile in appearence however at present they appear different. Please answer my original question.

Christophobia

just a bit sick of these silly jibes at Christianity we dont 'gorge' ourselves..its the secularists out there that do that..but then its so much easier for liberals to have a go at Christians rather than take a real look at islam..

What Is Xmas? I Reveal All!

19.12.2002 14:47

The Child is a King, the Carollers sing,
The old is passed there's a new beginning.
Dreams of Santa, dreams of snow,
Fingers numb, faces aglow.
Christmas time, mistletoe and wine
Children singing Christian rhyme
With logs on the fire and gifts on the tree
A time for rejoicing in all that we see

A time for living, a time for believing,
A time for trusting, not deceiving.
Love and laughter and joy ever after,
Ours for the taking, just follow the Master.

Christmas time, mistletoe and wine
Children singing Christian rhyme
With logs on the fire and gifts on the tree
A time for rejoicing in all that we see

A time for giving, a time for getting,
A time for forgiving and for forgetting.
Christmas is love, Christmas is peace
A time for hating and fighting to cease

Christmas time, mistletoe and wine
Children singing Christian rhyme
With logs on the fire and gifts on the tree
A time for rejoicing in all that we see

Christmas time, mistletoe and wine
Children singing Christian rhyme
With logs on the fire and gifts on the tree
A time for rejoicing in all that we see

I did not mention christianity or Liberal ideology in my questions. Can someone please answer my simple question of what we are supposed to be celebrating.Icannot see anything worthy of all the hype and euphoria everyone appears to be experiancing. What event or happening can possibly cause such drastic short term change in people and for what reason?Usualy everyone i see appears docile and uniterested in attitude. Please , please , someone just answer my simple questions instead of questioning my reasons for asking them.

In answer to "What is Christmas"

19.12.2002 16:44

In answering this question, I would endeavour to answer it in two ways:-

1. What Christmas is supposed to be about.
2. What Christmas has come to be about in reality.

1. Christmas, as the name suggests, is supposed to be about Christ. It is supposed to be about the celebration of his birth, like one big birthday party I suppose. Like a birthday we give gifts to people to show our love and affection for them. Chirst and Christianity is all about love so I guess giving presents is our symbolic way of showing this to one another. Christmas should revolve around Christ and God and our celebration and worship of him, and rejoycing in the good news (in this fucked up world), and our thanking of he for sacrifycing his life in such a horredrous way for us mostly scumy people and for thanking him for offering a future of happiness after we climb out of this shit hole that we have created.

2. But in reality Christmas has little to do with Christ anymore. Most people forget that the first 6 letters of the words Christmas are "Christ". Most people have forgotten or don't believe that this is supposed to be a celebration of him. Instead, true to our selfish nature, true to our animal instincts and ture to the nature of capitalism, we have turned Christmas into a time of the celebration of "Self". Christmas for most people is time off from work, office parties, going on the piss as many times as possible with friends, drinking, eating, buying clothes for oneself, one big hedonist party, etc. etc. We also buy presents for our friends and loved ones and this is essentially good (refer to my first answer), but again this has lost much of its meaning in that, urged on by Capitalism, the presents we purchase have gone overboard and we now spend ridiculous amount of money on people. Where as we should be just buying symbolic "tokens" for people to express our love for them, and we should try and devote much of our spending power to give to those who are really in need, and to those who can't give back to us, as essentially buying presents is like buying presnents for "yourself" (again) as every presnet we give out we get back.

But I do think giving tokens is true to the Christmas meaning as it does promote a goodwill feeling in us and a feeling of love towards others.

So I think Christmas has not come to be a "total" disaster in that feelings of goodwill towards our fellow man and neighbour are promoted. But the true meaning of it (i.e. Christ) has been lost and the true meaning of our neighbour has been lost and to those who we really should be giving so much more to.

Probably not the answer you wanted to hear or believe in, but I believe it is somewhere in and around the "truth".

THIS MUST BE UP FOR A PRIZE

THE MICHAEL JACKSON PRIZE FOR THE WACKIEST AND MOST IRRELEVANT ARTICLE ON IMC SO FAR...

ANOTHER OPINION

Response to Another Opinion

19.12.2002 18:02

In response to your comment "this must be up for a prize", it makes me laugh and I can see where you are coming from, but considering the original question posed related to the euphoria of Christmas vs. the shite going on around the world, and considering this site is largely about the shite going on around the world I think the question/answers are relevant so unfortunately the prize will probably have to go elsewhere.

Also, Christmas has also become a symbolism of Capitalism, a symbol of how Capitalism has taken over the world and pushed all other ideoligies aside. And again considering this site is largely anti-capitalist, and offering an alternative news medium to the capatilist, right-wing controlled world media, again I think the relevance is clear.

Christmas is crap - unfortunately

19.12.2002 19:40

Whereas it ought to be a celebration of renewal and rebirth, and an important node in the world energy grid
Unfortunately most of us who celebrate it do so in stupid and stupefied fashion, and ultimately help line the bulging wallets of the real rulers of the world, who will no doubt celebrate the true meaning of the season with a few ritual rapes and human sacrifices. In fact, I'm sure they'd have liked a bit of mass slaughter in Iraq going on this year to help them really relish Yuletide.
Foiled in this, perhaps they'll give us a terrorist atrocity instead.
BTW thanks for your persistence in reposting the article. THAT BLOODY ERROR MESSAGE HAS BLOCKED EVERYTHING i'VE POSTED OR COMMENTED ON IN THE PAST WEEK OR TWO, including a post asking im to do something about it.
Hope my participation here doesn't take down your contrbution too

Christmas never has been about christ

22.12.2002 23:58

Christmass isn't, and never has been about christ. Why do you think it comes just after the winter solstice?

Christains have attached a name, and some rituals to it, but christmas isn't about anything - it's just a traditional time for people have fun together, when there's not much daylight. I don't see anything wrong with that. There's a lot wrong with the world, and we need to do something about it, but I don't see why we can't also spend some time enjoying each other's company.

In capitalist socety, traders use christmass as an oportunity to sell as much as they possibly can, as they do any other opportunity. That's a problem with capitilism, not christmas.
