TEL AVIV - A well-known Canadian activist has been detained by Israeli authorities in Tel Aviv, a Montreal group says.

Jaggi Singh arrived in Israel on Sunday and was detained by authorities at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport, said Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights and International Solidarity, a Montreal-based pro-Palestinian group.

The group released a statement expressing concern over Singh's safety.

The statement says customs and security officials questioned Singh for several hours and told him to go back to Canada. He apparently refused.

Singh left Montreal for the Middle East Saturday night, intending to visit and report from the occupied territories and Israel.

Singh has been active at many protests in Canada over the years, and has had several brushes with authorities here.
