STOP OIL EXPLORATION IN AMAZONIAN PERU!

A protester who lives in Amazonian Peru confronted the President of his country whilst he was in London yesterday. President Alejandro Toledo was in London to address the ‘Friends of Peru’ at Goldsmiths Hall, to address the ‘London School of Economics and Political Science’ and to meet with Prime Minister Blair.

The protester, Mr. Huayqui Ocean, (representing the Organisation of Aymara, Amazon, and Quecha Communities) was demonstrating at the fact that the Ancient Forests that are home to so many thousands of species of plants and animals, and that are the home to 27 indigenous peoples are being destroyed for the sake of oil exploration.

The President, his ambassador to the UK and his diplomats were all obviously surprised to see the small group of protesters. As a result, Dr. Toledo came to speak with the protester outside Goldsmiths Hall, face to face. He listened to what Mr. Ocean had to say, and thanked him for reminding him of the situation.

Mr. Ocean, who is President of the Otorongo Holistic Ecology Centre, which campaigns against Globalisation on the principles of deep ecology, explained, “I hope that the President listens to our desperate pleas to save the ancient forests and that he stops allowing oil exploration in Peru.”
