US Military to get student data from schools

James Holland | 03.12.2002 15:32

Thanks to a new education law the Pentagon is now allowed access to information that US schools hold on their pupils.

The US army says that it just needs the information to help it recruit more young people, but even if that's all it is, many schools, teachers, parent and organisations are unhappy even though there is an option for parents to 'opt-out'. Donna Lieberman of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said that the opt-out provision is inadequate and that schools should be doing more to protect students' privacy. US citizens already have to register with the Pentagon Selective Service within a month of turning 18, but this new law enable to the services to be able to begin the process of recruiting when children are still at school.
