Gold Coast conman Peter Foster has caused grief for the wife of British Prime Minister Tony Blair by carrying on an affair with the fitness and fashion adviser. Cherie Blair has been urged to sack Carol Caplin, whom she once described as "indispensable".
Foster, 39, who has been jailed on three continents for selling bogus slimming products, had already met the Blair's son, Euan, and spoken to Mrs Blair by phone. Horrified staff at 10 Downing St, the PM's official London home, have told Mr. Blair that Miss Caplin is a liability who must be cut adrift, together with Foster.
But Mrs Blair has refused to bow to pressure.
She holds Miss Caplin, 40, in such high regard that the adviser is a regular visitor to Downing St and the PM's official country residence, Chequers.
Miss Caplin's mother Sylvia is Mrs Blair's alternative therapy guru and a medium who claims to consult the spirit world to seek guidance.
Mrs Blair's meetings with Mrs. Caplin have already caused alarm in Dowling St.
The added presence of Foster, who met Miss Caplin after becoming a client of her mother's, has made Mr Blair's aides even more nervous about the Caplins. "The feeling among Downing St staff is that it's time these women were got rid of," one insider said. "They have far too much influence over Mrs Blair." Miss Caplin has tried to portray Foster to the Blair's as a reformed character.
But his shameful records, including jail sentence in Britain, the United States and Australian, speaks for itself. Fined for an insurance fraud in Australia when he was just 17 and bankrupt by 22, Foster first came to prominence in Britain in 1986 when he started dating topless model Samantha Fox, when at the height of her fame.
The following year Foster's Bai Lin "slimming" tea was exposed as a con. Foster went on to serve jail terms in Australia, the US and Britain for frauds mostly related to slimming products. In the past few months Foster has been renting a $NZ 1.684 million apartment in London and has been linked to a business marketing slimming aids in Ireland.
Foster and Miss Caplin had lunch with Euan Blair in Bristol last month, which is when he spoke to Mrs Blair on the phone. Miss Caplin has advised Mrs Blair on everything from diet to fashion for more than 10 years. She is a former cover girl for soft-porn magazine Men Only.
