FBU AGREE TO SUSPEND STRIKE ACTION PLANNED FOR
WEDNESDAY 4TH DECEMBER
ACAS TO FACILITATE EXPLORATORY TALKS
The Fire Brigades Union’s Executive Council has met today and have welcomed the constructive intervention by the Chair of ACAS, Rita Donaghy, into the current Fire Service Pay Dispute.
The FBU Executive Council has today agreed to take part in exploratory talks with ACAS to look at means and mechanisms for a positive way forward.
As further proof of the non-political nature of this dispute on the part of the FBU, the Executive Council has taken the decision to suspend the 8-day strike due to commence at 09.00 hours on Wednesday 4th December 2002.
Andy Gilchrist FBU General Secretary said: “We welcome the intervention of ACAS at this stage of the dispute and hope that all parties involved will grasp this opportunity to find a settlement agreeable to all parties concerned.”

• Currently, Professional Firefighters are paid £21,531 per annum.
• Emergency Fire Control Officers are paid 92% of this rate.
• Professional Retained Firefighters are paid substantially less than their Wholetime colleagues i.e. £6.20 per hour.
• Currently, Firefighters pay is linked to a National Formula which was borne out of the only National Strike ever in the UK Fire Service, in 1977.
