TUC backs FBU march and rally on 7 December
Welcoming today’s announcement from the Fire Brigades Union that they are to hold a march and rally next weekend (7 December) in support of their campaign for a fair settlement for firefighters, TUC General Secretary John Monks said:

'Trade unionists and members of the public will welcome the opportunity to show their support for firefighters by turning out for the march and rally in London next Saturday. The TUC will be doing all it can to help the FBU ensure that the day is an overwhelming success.'

Details concerning the route, end of the march venue and speakers for the rally are still being finalised. The TUC and its affiliated unions will be co-ordinating transport to London from towns and cities across the UK.
As more information about the 7 December march and rally becomes available, it will be placed on the TUC website www.tuc.org.uk/fire

all well and good

but when other unions have mysteriously cancelled their own strike ballots, such as tube workers, airport ermergency staff and some remaining miners, it suggests a failed strategy. workplace action is the real solidairity, and cannot be replaced by show-demos alone...

The real problem is lack of afordable housing

28.11.2002 20:05

The real problem face all public sector workers is not low pay but lack of affordable housing where amny of them work such as London and the southeast with many having to commute from the other side of the country to work. The solution therefore is to provide more affordable accomadation for public sector workers. Just raising wages will not solve the problem as house prices will rise further as more people come onto the housing market and so fuel inflation.

Harlequin

Harlequin's right

28.11.2002 21:09

So why don't the selfish firefighters start charging less for rents and housing???? Um....

Or maybe Harly's a middle class twat who wouldn't understand the concept of "solidarity" if it pissed on him/her/it.

Just a thought....

repeat posting

29.11.2002 14:27

bear with me on this; harleqwuin is WRONG. he is precsiely wrong, and he repeats a fallacy which was refuted by marx himself. please see the short booklet @wages prices and profit@ where marx argues aginst someone called weston, who falsely states exactly what harlequin does.
i dont think harlequin has ever the read the marx with whom he claims to be so disillusioned. harlequin argues aginst the firemens demands, stating that socialist principles mean everyone gets the same. marx NEVER said that; he consistently argues that under a socialist system (the prerequisite ) people would ideally receive what they NEED, while generally contributing what they CAN. by contrast, the concept of everybody getting the same is liable to end in totalitarianism, not socialism.

Why cancel the Stop the War conference?

30.11.2002 00:24

Sat 7th was the date of the Stop the War Coalition National conference now postponed for the Firefighters demo. As we are rapidly approaching war with Iraq, why does the firefighters demo take precedence? yes, big important time for unity with TUC (who don't give a fuck about us), and for building support around firefighters (and I agree they should win) but what is the most important issue at the moment? The conference should not have been cancelled for the demo. Nice for Blair etc. Takes the heat off in one area even if it puts it on in another. and they can sort out the firefighters dispute tomorrow if they want too, the potential war on Iraq is more serious and likely to run and run...

Sara

Firecrew's are hampering war effort

30.11.2002 08:35

Sara, all the military forces currently deployed as fire cover during the strike are too busy helping to save lives in britain to have time to kill people elsewhere.
I reckon thats a good thing at least in the short term.
(See MoD's own press releases for confirmation)

odd co-incidences about this

30.11.2002 14:46

IF union strike ballots have been cancelled AND so too the war conference, this sugests there has been a massive amount of backstage manipulation going on; any opinons ?
