'Suicide' attack on Israeli naval patrol

Three Israeli sailors were wounded when a suspected
Palestinian fishing boat blew up near a naval patrol
boat off the coast of Gaza.

The Israeli military says its patrol boat approached the
other vessel and tried to make contact with two
"suspicious" people on board after it entered Israeli
waters.

When there was no response, they sprayed water at it
and then fired warning shots in an attempt to force it
back into Palestinian waters, the spokesman said.

The "suicide fishing boat" then exploded, injuring the
three Israeli servicemen and damaging their boat.

The two men on board the fishing boat are thought to
have died in the blast.

The Israeli military spokesman said he could not recall
a similar attack on an Israeli naval vessel.

There has been no word on the incident from the
Palestinians.

The BBC's Barbara Plett says it is possible that the boat
that blew up may have been smuggling arms.

Palestinian fishermen off the Gaza coast are subject to
tight restrictions from the Israeli navy, which fears it
may be the target of attack
