Hunterston to close?

Hunterston nuclear power station in Ayrshire may be closed in a bid to cut costs and save skint nuclear operators British Energy from going bust.
The revelation that the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate have been asked to prepare plans for possible closure of the plant was leaked to the Scottish Green Party by a source inside the nuclear industry.
This may seem like great news after all one less nuclear power station operating in Scotland should reduce the risk of nuclear accidents and also reduce waste shipment to Sellafied. However, the big danger is that British Energy simply walk away from Hunterston, sacking all the workers and leaving the people of Scotland to deal with the mess. The plant must be properly decommissioned and cleaned-up after all ten years after decommissioning began at the Trawsfynydd nuclear plant in Wales, 180 workers are still employed in the clean up.
Scotland is hugely oversupplied with electricity, plus we have Europe's best potential for renewable wind and wave energy - we don't need Hunterston, but we don't need a nuclear mess left on Glasgow's doorstep. Clean it up and shut it down!
