Nazis win council seat

Marxist_Mike | 22.11.2002 08:29

The far-right BNP have taken a council seat in Blackburn, Lancashire
in a by-election surprise to add to three seats it already holds in
the North West.

Candidate Robin Evans won the Mill Hill seat in Blackburn with a
majority of just 16 votes.

The seat on Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council became vacant after
a Liberal Democrat councillor left the area.

There were angry scenes even before the count took place at the old
town hall in Blackburn.

Between 30 to 40 demonstrators shouted insults at the BNP candidate
and his supporters as they entered the building.

After a tense recount, the BNP took the seat with 578 votes to
Labour's 562, the Lib Dems 505 and the Conservatives 154, with
turnout at 39%.

The election saw Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, MP for Blackburn,
campaigning for Labour.

Blackburn has a large Asian community but has avoided the racial
tensions seen in other parts of northern England.

Politicians, trade unionists and community leaders last month began a
campaign to unseat the BNP's three councillors in Burnley.

Their election came after inter-racial rioting in Burnley and other
towns in the North West in summer last year.

The official report into the violence in June 2001 said organised
white racists had exploited clashes to exacerbate tensions and fears.

It urged the government to tackle "shockingly" divided communities in
Bradford, Burnley and Oldham, which have large British Asian
communities.

But the BNP has said its election success stems from the
marginalisation of white residents by the main political parties.

The four councillors now in office are the BNP's only success on
local councils since the short-lived election of Derek Beackon in
Tower Hamlets, London, in 1993.

A campaign by politicians and activists helped to unseat the
councillor.

Elsewhere on Thursday night, the Tories lost their overall majority
at Dacorum Borough, Hertfordshire, when Labour gained a Woodhall
seat.

Labour narrowly kept its overall majority at Bolton Borough, Greater
Manchester, when it won at Daubhill.

Left needs to get its finger out

22.11.2002 11:32

The truth is that the left, especially the ANL, is failing to respond to the concerns of the economically and politically marginalised. It is all too keen to parachute in activists into deprived areas to scream and shout about the march of the Nazis, while the BNP is managing to mobilise effectively and on a long-term basis. There is no doubt the BNP is a nasty, racist party, but it has a highly effective and intelligent organisation that can mobilise people. It is a far cry from the bull-necked skinheads of the 1970s, although its leaders have armfuls of convictions for racist violence. If you want to defeat the BNP, then you have to start mobilising support from the grass-roots. That does not mean selling papers on street corners or setting up meetings solely to push an ideology. It means listening to people, bringing people on board and empowering them in their own communities. The Hackney Working Class Association is a model for left-wing activism in local government, while the Socialist Alliance has alienated many erstwhile supporters due to its dogmatism and its stress on all the wrong issues. People in Bethnal Green voting in Tower Hamlets council elections don't want a crusade under the red flag for high-flying ideals and an end to third world debt. They want an end to poor housing, they want clean streets without crime, they want an end to the social problems associated with deprivation. The BNP speaks their language and many will vote for it because they feel the BNP is the best chance to shake the establishment and get them listening. The left needs to take a leaf out of the BNP's book as far as organising is concerned.

well okay but..

Okay, I see where you're coming from. But then wouldn't it be more helpful if the IWCA tried to get some sort of organisation up and running in places like Blackburn, Burnley, Oldham etc, rather than just criticising what the ANL do there?

At the moment it looks worryingly like the IWCA just stick in their heartlands in East London and East Oxford (where they are undeniably a force to be reckoned with), criticising ANL strategy from afar. Come on, if you have a better strategy to beat the BNP, when will you start implementing it nationally?

I am not a member or spokesman for the IWCA, so I can't speak on their behalf. Perhaps the issue of expanding into other urban areas is something you should raise with them.

Terrorism

22.11.2002 13:27

Combat 18 is nothing but the terrorist wing of the BNP. Under the BNP's own "law and order" policies, the BNP should be disbanded and many of its members and associates (such as the UFF) should be executed - the BNP pledges to kill any convicted terrorist. The entire BNP hierarchy is full of criminals convicted of violent assaults, including attacks on policemen. One wonders what they mean by taking a firm line on criminality - perhaps it means putting gangsters like the Crays in charge of the East End, just as in the "good old days" before the "nig-nogs" came.

observations from afar...

22.11.2002 17:05

this is just my opinion, as an american, but here's how "The Right" always seems to work.

the right talk a good game. they're such experts at it. here in the states, or in germany. hitler was a good talker. he let the germans hear what they wanted to hear, appealed to their pride and nationalism. on and on, they talked such a good game. of course, they don't talk about racist policies, their fetish for uniforms and authority and control, rounding up immigrants, theories about the "higher intelligence" of the white man. that's not what wins them elections.

but then they come to power, after gaining everybody's support by saying what everybody wants to hear. so they feel legitimized. they swell with pride, and start to trot out their other policies, the ones they didn't discuss during their campaigns, like how people who aren't white are "genetically more likely to enjoy causing crime". all the rubbish and bullshit and racism they were too fucking cowardly and weak to talk about in public.

so let's just see if this BNP party actually follows through with it's racist policies. let's see if they're simply weak pussies talking a good game who are afraid to reveal themselves, or real live nazis doing what they do best. two chioces: cowards, or nazis. take your pick, BNP fuckers.

as for the left, it can never seem to get a coherent message accross, or talk a good game if it tried. but at least its heart is on the right side in this battle...

DONT VOTE FOR THEM

I agree with what the guy above said.

The BNP are just nazis who sweet talk the public, their policies are not at all open, what do you think 18 stands for? 1st letter alphabet is A, 8th letter is H, A.H., Adolf Hitler. The BNP young guy on Young Nazi and Proud also wore a t-shirt which just said 18, and many of the BNP had swastikas tatooed on them. There are claims that that was selective journalism, but even if it was really selective, which tv journalism has to be as it needs to be short, i dont think you'd find a similar report on the left revealing their hatred of jews and non-whites, and their love of hitler and nazis.

theyre racists

I agree with Dan

bnp are liberals

23.11.2002 19:48

i consider the bnp to be too libertarian. ROPE is the answer to the flood of illegal immigrants coming into this nation, not voluntary repatriation.
