Called by Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers, Barbed Wire Britain

ASYLUM RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS
The government¹s latest Nationality, Asylum and Immigration Act 2002 is the
most serious assault yet on the rights of those seeking refuge in Britain.
It brings an increasing use of detention without trial, segregated health
and education facilities for asylum-seeking children and the re-introduction
of a so-called ³white list² of East European countries whose nationals will
automatically be treated as ³bogus² if they seek asylum in Britain.
Even before the passage of the legislation, the Home Secretary was showing
his determination to remain a firm favourite with the editors of the Daily
Mail.
This summer and autumn have seen the lengths to which he is prepared to go
to kick a family of Afghan refugees the Ahmadis out of Britain, with a
dawn raid on a mosque and deceitful statements in court.
The Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers and Barbed Wire Britain have come
together to mark Human Rights Day with a public meeting that highlights the
government¹s serious assault on refugee rights and gives a voice to those
who are standing up for refugees.
Come and find out what the latest act has in store for asylum seekers, and
what you can do to campaign for a major relaxation in legislation and a
policy that says ³Asylum Seekers are Welcome Here².
