EU SUMMIT IN DENMARK

Who is the Initiative towards a different Europe

The Initiative towards a different Europe is a coalition of left wing parties, activists groups, social movements, students organizations and trade unions.

The Initiative wants a different Europe based on solidarity and democracy, where environmental concerns is more important than the profits of multinational corporations. We will create popular mobilization against the neo-liberal politics of EU, which is creating social inequality, undermining our democratic rights and creating poverty in the third world.

Through the years the organizations in the Initiative have been mobilising the Danes to the big counter-summits during the EU conferences in Europe. This time we invite people from all of Europe to come to Copenhagen.

From December 12 to 14 the EU-summit is held in Copenhagen. Here 50.000 people from all over Europe will be demonstrating again for a Europe different from the one the eurocrats and the multinational companies are planning. A Europe without privatisation, social exclusion, unemployment, environmental destruction and racism. A Europe where everybody can live a decent life.

It will be a week with demonstrations, political and creative workshops, music and entertainment. Everything with the sole purpose of mobilizing the population and catching the attention of the politicians, the officials and the eurocrats on the other side of the fences.

The Initiative has three main activities during the EU-summit in December:

On Friday the 13th of December the Initiative is arranging a torchlight demonstration against racism and Fortress Europe. It starts at 17.00 from Enghave Plads. There will be lighting of candles in remembrance of the victims of Fortress Europe.

On Saturday the 14th of December the Initiative is arranging an international demonstration with demonstrators from Denmark and all over Europe. The main slogan is “Our World is not for Sale – People before Profit”. There will be speakers from Denmark, Western Europe, Eastern Europe and from the third world countries.
The demonstration begins at 11:00 on Christiansborg Slotsplads.

On Sunday the 15th of December the Initiative is arranging an international gathering on the subject of the resistance to privatisation. It is being held at Holmen where there will be introductions on the subject by activists from all over the world . Participation is free of charge. See program elsewhere in this paper.

The Initiative is based on a common political platform and a non-violence strategi. We are co-operation with other coalitions planning activities in December, i.e. Stop Unionen 2002 and NGO Forum.
