Saturday November 2nd 2002

A large crowd of protesters turned out in Adelaide, Australia today, opposing Australian involvement in any military conflict in Iraq.

Assembling in Adelaide’s central Victoria Square the rally proceeded through the CBD to the steps of the South Australian Parliament.

A number of speakers addressed the people, including democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett, a Greens spokesperson, and a Doctor from the Medical Association for Prevention of War

The physician told of when he asked an Iraqi patient what she thought of the possibility of a military campaign in Iraq, the patient replied “the Iraqi people have suffered enough why should they suffer more”.

Officers of the South Australian police were on hand to ensure the protestors were not denied their right to free speech and assembly.

No breach of the peace was reported although one officer confiscated a bottle of beer from one of the protesters. Adelaide has alcohol free zones.

The police placed the bottle in the centre of North terrace where it was guarded. It is not known if the bottle was considered a threat to national security or whether the centre of a main public thoroughfare was considered a suitable temporary storage facility for the seized contraband.

A further action is to be convened on Saturday 30 November, 11am in Victoria Square
