Here is a press release for the Party for Peace being organised tonight in belfast city centre.

29 October 2002

Hundreds to Attend Party For Peace

Globalise Resistance are having a “Party For Peace” on Halloween evening (Thurs) from 4pm till 8pm. We have booked the Bandstand at the Cornmarket in Belfast, where a number of bands and poets, will perform anti-war songs and poetry.

It is predicted that the crowd will be mainly young people who want to show their disgust against the so-called “war on terror” and current era of almost permanent war. The event is being built in several schools and colleges around Belfast, with attendance expected to be high. It is being billed as “a rage against war”.

Dan Buckley, one of the organisers of the event says “for the US to talk about weapons of mass destruction when they have just passed a bill authorising a $355.1 billion defence budget is hypocrisy. We want to show Bush and Blair that internationally we are going to build a bigger opposition to them bombing Iraq, than we saw during the Vietnam War”.

The Irish Anti War Movement has endorsed the event, one member, Barbara Muldoon says “young people were at the very heart of the last great movement against the war in Vietnam. They don’t necessarily want to be lectured about what they should do. This is their way of telling us that when the time comes they will take to the streets”.
