SIX ‘DIE’ DURING WELSH ASSEMBLY PROTEST

News release – 30th October 2002

SIX ‘DIE’ DURING WELSH ASSEMBLY PROTEST

At 2.45 p.m. on Wednesday 30 October 2002, six members of the Wales Against the War Campaign ‘died’ inside the main chamber of the National Assembly for Wales disrupting the session in progress. The direct action protest was to draw attention to the large number of civilian deaths that will occur if the US / UK resume war against Iraq.

Ian Brown, a spokesperson for the campaign, said: ‘Even though 68% of the British people deplore any attack against Iraq (according to the Guardian/ICM survey of 8th October), political institutions in the UK continue to refuse to listen to the views of the majority. This includes the Welsh Assembly which refused to issue any clear statement yesterday regarding the potential conflict.’

‘We have no choice but to resort to non-violent, direct action to make our voices heard.’

This action was a forerunner to a welter of direct acts of civil disobedience set to take place across the UK tomorrow (31st October) as part of the DAY OF ACTION called by the Stop the War Coalition. A protest march will be leaving from the Aneurin Bevan Statue in Queen St, Cardiff at 6 p.m.
