Direct Action against the war [uk list]

nathan | 24.10.2002 12:37

If you are doing an action against the war on October 31st as part of the decentralised day of action - add a comment under this text to say where and when (obviously only if it is a public action) those doing other actions can post reports after so this site can list them all, showing how diverse and decentralised the actions are going to be.

Lets use Indymedia to report all the actions that happen on October 31st ; our strength is in our 1000's of direct actions being seen as one mobilisation not small separate one. People from all walks of life and politics will be doing actions and all should be seen, not just the dominant one. So lets get a list together and report ourselves what is happening in our locations.

Disobedience preparation day, Oct 27th, LARC

24.10.2002 12:55

There'll be a preparation day for the 6pm Parliament action (not to mention the 2pm Imperial War Museum Pedal for Peace) at the London Action Resource Centre (LARC), 62 Fieldgate St., London E1, Aldgate or Whitechapel tubes, from midday to 6pm.

It'll be an opportunity to learn about and help with banner-making, as well as a chance to talk through various aspects of direct action, from the emotional to the practical, in preparation for Hallowe'en and beyond...

Pedal for Peace, London

Pedal for Peace - bike ride against war. Starting at 2pm, Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Rd, and (hopefully) ending at Parliament Square at 6pm. We'll be 'visiting' sites connected with the war machine along the way.

Leicester on 31st and after

24.10.2002 13:39

Leicester direct actionists against the war are pushing for not so much a DIRECT ACTION on the 31st itelf, but that we organise a public street rally on the day and use it to build for more SOLID direct action on the day after the war "officially" begins.

So far, we've produced about a hundred "Sabotage the war effort" A3 posters for flyposting, as well as an initial few hundred flyers (for handing out outside a couple of big local employers).

The info we're putting out says the following:

"SABOTAGE THE WAR EFFORT!

Want to stop the war?
Then put a spanner in the works!

The day after war 'officially' begins...

* Don't go into work - either go on strike (if possible) or phone in sick
* Then everyone to the CLOCKTOWER (nb: a local landmark in Leicester city centre) for 8.00am
* With DIRECT ACTION we aim to disrupt 'business as usual' and bring the war home to the politicians
* And when you do go into work, try and set up a direct action group against the war with your workmates
* Get in touch with us and anyone else who's into putting the kybosh on Blair's, Bush's and all the other leeches' war plans

FIGHT THE BOSSES, NOT THEIR WARS!"

There are a few good ideas for specific direct actions floating around the Leicester radical ether. These mostly depend on possible numbers involved of course.

The 31st is as good a time as any to organise stuff, but for now, the war will go ahead whatever we do. We need to build resistance to it and plan our response for when the full scale attack on Iraq begins.

Why publisise nationally now

24.10.2002 15:40

Why make a list of all the direct action happening, now. Surely this is the best way for the cops to clamp down on our freedom of expression. Organise your own NVDAs in small affinity groups, organise mass die ins but don't make a national list now....

I agree with Concerned above

I'll be taking part in a planned stoppage of a very busy North London road intersection at midday. If I tell where now, I'm increasing the risk of mine and others' arrest. The whole point of the day is to create a national show of DISOBEDIENCE against this war - let's try to make the actions effective and publicise them AFTER the event. In the meantime, connect with local people (either through Stop The War Coalition or by yourselves), create interesting and subversive actions, and then report on them when they're done.

In London, try not to get arrested before you get down to Parliament Square for 6 pm - that's where we need the biggest crowds to hamper police attempts to control mass disobedience by those willing to risk arrest.

A reminder too that violence loses us the argument so please keep it firm but fluffy!

I also agree with the other poster about making a few leaflets/fliers/stickers etc yourself and spreading them locally - I've been doing this too with very positive response, aswell as stickering the Tube with home-made slogans and info.

Also don't forget that many people have been illegally writing anti-war slogans on banknotes, and that as these do remain legal tender we should happily pass on any that we happen to come across :)

Peace peace peace.

Fluffy Bombs?

25.10.2002 00:32

"Keep it Fluffy"!!!!!!! This isn't a fucking video game!
When war starts it will mean thousands of innocents
being slaughtered. And you have the fucking audacity
to tell people to "Keep it Fluffy". Wake up and smell
the fucking coffee.

The first poster made the idea clear

25.10.2002 09:41

For those that are worried about the police coming and stopping your action, it is obvious you should not put the date and time here now, but some people are doing open public direct actions and know the police can not stop them. If the police see thay have to be everywhere on the day they willl not be able to prevent the public from voicing its opposition to the coming war, that is the point of mass direct action.

So instead of whining and telling evryone to keep it secret, as that is so much cooler, just be aware that there can be many types of action on the day and your style is not the only one. Diverse actions for a diverse population, and keep them guessing.

I support all actions on the day and would hate direct action to be confined to a small segment of society, show a little respect for others and let people go as far as they want to go, that way we build a movement rather than have an elite that are macho enough to do actipons and a passive public.

firm but fluffy disbedience

25.10.2002 14:03

oi mr anarcho-disbedient (presumably youngish, male, fit, macho leanings?) there's more than one way to be fluffy, just like there's more than one way to be violent.
most people will find the idea of violent acts against war (i.e. actually against whatever poor ignorant sod of a police man gets in your way) plainly illogical. that in no way means that they will fail to take real tough direct action against war of many and various forms - forms most likely to be more effective than the mail and standard's preferred broken heads and angry, alienating interludes with no outcome beyond the usual marginalisation, demonisation and arguments internal to the movement.
so, please wake up and smell the fucking logic... and tolerate our differences?

no coverage l0/3l on BBC of London's protest

31.10.2002 23:30

I hope the British will swamp BBC with complaints - because
no one in the US without internet or English contacts would
know anything happened today in Britain. There wasn't even
the slightest mention of anti-war activities. The most
important thing happening in Britain today, and British
news ignores it completely. This is a crime!!!
