Momentum builds for LSE anti-war occupation

Jim | 23.10.2002 19:16

Students at the London School of Economics are set to take over their college on the national day of direct action against the war. Over 300 students voted overwhelmingly to oppose war on Iraq at a Union meeting last week and the anti-war movement continues to grow.

Momentum builds for LSE anti-war occupation

The London School of Economics Stop the War Coalition (STWC) has announced that it will be playing a major role in the national day of direct action called for the 31st October 2002 by the UK Stop the War Coalition ( www.stopwar.org.uk ). On that day, members of the STWC will initiate a student occupation of the LSE so that a ‘teach-in’ can take place on the subject of the war against Iraq. Members of the LSE STWC believe that debate on this subject in Britain is being stifled and that this form of direct action is the only way to ensure that discussion can take place. The ‘teach-in’ will welcome both anti- and pro-war points of view. Speakers currently confirmed for the debate include the journalist Tariq Ali.

For this event and the rally in Westminster planned for the evening of the 31st October, LSE STWC will be joined by students from University College London (UCL) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). The LSE Coalition is formed from across the political spectrum and its planning meetings have attracted up to 100 participants. Building on the back of the anti-war march attended by 400,000 people in London last month, the LSE Student Union’s General Meeting adopted an anti-war motion by an overwhelming majority in its session on October 17th.

Media representatives are welcome to attend STWC’s next planning meeting on Thursday October 24th at 6pm.

Few students are in the anti-war movement

23.10.2002 19:43

Very few students seem to be involved in the anti-war movement considering that there are hundreds of thousands of students across the whole of Britain! At the LSE there are several thousand students but only 300 involved in the anti-war movement, that is very dissapointing!

But Put In Perspective

Considering the amount of people that usually attend student union meeting this IS significant.

And once again the above writer slams anything positive coming from the movement in an attempt to contain it. Just as if anybody points a finger at the powers that be, he, and u know it's a he will be defending the power men.

In other words fuck off Special Branch/MI5........

Never U Mind

Come on

It's a little easy to hide behind the MI5 slate which crops up now and then. It was a negative comment and well done for the upcoming event. There are too few radical movements in the student world in the UK presently but that is not to take away from those who are creating something now.

Have a good day and try not to assume every point made negatively is secret service as it delects from the issue. All power to you.

As the instigator (*grin*) of the sit-down protest that blocked Westminster Bridge in the student grant protests of the early 80s (yes - it was me, Phil 'turncoat' Woollas - why were you on top of a bus stop with the coppers and their cameras, Mr Labour MP for Oldham?), all I can say is - go kids go!!!!!!!!

If you ever need an old wreck to help you out, drop me a line.

....But watch out for them SWERP bastards. Or before you know it, you'll be on some futile "sit in" holding a lollipop in a disused lecture hall!
