Media D Day outside the Daily Mail in London

rtm | 18.10.2002 16:22

At around 8.45am this morning, in solidarity with Media Democracy Day, a group of media activists gathered outside the offices of associated Newspapers in Kensington, london.

Associated Newspapers run the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, The Evening Standard and the Metro.

Security knew in advance about the event but no police were present.

A long red banner saying "Reclaim the Media" was unfurled in front of the Northcliffe House headquarters as staff arrived and activists conducted interviews about Media Democracy Day, with cameras and video cams to the fore.

Hundreds of leaflets explaining Media D Day and criticising the corporate media were handed out to staff as they arrived but the majority refused to comment on the papers they worked for when questioned. Info sheets on October 'Media Action Month' were also distributed as were copies of Corporatewatch's article on the PR Industries profits from the 'war on terrorism'. Perhaps the favourite was the 'Media Detox Plan' sheet.

Most workers took the sheets, only two screwing them up and throwing them on the floor, although a fair few pulled faces and hurried on inside.

Some did speak to us telling us that they agreed with the issues but that they needed to earn a living (at the daily mail !!??)

Other comments included "Oh no who have the Mail pissed off now?" and "Yeah I've read the website, spot on". Someone else said the real villains are the actual journos (many of which are freelance), editors and owners, rather than the day to day staff.

Leaflets were also distributed to passers by.
