But a Bali nightclub is an unlikely target for al-Qaeda.
It has no strategic value, it does not hurt a Western government, and it was not a favoured haunt of al-Qaeda's preferred targets: Americans and Jews.

The cleric believed to be the head of an Indonesian Islamist group with links to al-Qa'ida denied yesterday that he was involved with the Bali bombings
"I suspect the bombings were carried out by the US and its allies to justify allegations that Indonesia is a base for terrorists. The US hates me because I struggle in the name of Islam".

Oct. 21 issue — Dick Cheney played a behind-the-scenes role last week in derailing an agreement to create an independent commission to investigate the 9-11 attacks. Last month the White House endorsed the formation of the panel. But on Thursday, hours after congressional negotiators hailed a final deal over the scope and powers of a 9-11 panel, Cheney called House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Porter Goss, sources told NEWSWEEK

The Indonesian Government has also been debating forcing through emergency anti-terrorism measures to give police sweeping powers in the aftermath of the attack on the nightclub on Kuta beach.
On Wednesday, local media also said two vans appeared to have been used for the attack, and the device - containing a C-4 plastic explosive - was detonated remotely.

In past cases in Indonesia, whenever C-4 has been found in any bombing, it has been traced to the military, raising speculation the explosive was bought or stolen from military stocks.
Indonesia's intelligence chief, Mohamad Abdul Hendropriyono, told reporters his organization is co-operating with foreign agencies in the investigation.
"This attack has been well-planned and it required expertise in handling high-tech (bombs)," he said. "It is a very complicated task and is outside the ability of local hands."

The Central Intelligence Agency issued an intelligence report listing Bali among possible targets of a pending terrorist attack just two weeks before the weekend's devastating Kuta bomb blast, the Washington Post is reporting.
All information gathered by United States and Australian intelligence agencies is shared between the countries. But the Prime Minister, John Howard, said yesterday he had no knowledge of the US report.

A small amount of C-4 packs a pretty big punch. Less than a pound of C-4 could potentially kill several people, and several military issue M112 blocks of C-4, weighing about 1.25 pounds (half a kilogram) each, could potentially demolish a truck. Demolition experts typically use a good amount of C-4 in order to do a job properly. To take out one 8-inch (20.3-centimeter) square steel beam, for example, they would probably use 8 to 10 pounds (3.6 to 4.5 kilograms) of C-4.
The U.S. military is the primary manufacturer of C-4

Almost a month after the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen, the FBI continues to refuse to release any information on the origins of the over 1,000 pounds of C-4 explosive used in the attack.
The FBI, which has a major ongoing problem with Gore campaign and the White House over fundraising scandals, and the media, which have ignored the story, seem to be cooperating in an effort to protect or at the very least, do damage control, on a potentially explosive story questioning the integrity of the US Armed Forces and Government.
To put it bluntly, C-4, a tightly controlled part of the US Armed Forces military arsenal, was used to attack a US military target, killing and wounding scores of American military personnel, and how this came to be isn't something the American public would be very interested in? Who could they be protecting, being that the FBI has known for over 3 weeks exactly where the C-4 came from due to the recorded chemical "fingerprint" unique to each batch of C-4?
