UPDATE ON 'ANTI-WAR' BANKNOTES

rikki | 09.10.2002 23:21

Writing anti-war slogans on banknotes is apparently illegal! I didn't know this when I posted the idea previously, and I wouldn't wish to be seen as inciting anyone to commit a criminal act, so I offer the following information for your education only.

According to the Bank Of England it is an offence under the Currency and Banknotes Act 1928 (section 12) if: "any person prints, or stamps or by any like means impresses, on any bank note any words, letters or figures"

However this is a matter for the Police and the Courts as far as the BofE is concerned, and any sloganised notes remain legal tender and should be accepted by shops and will certainly be exchanged by High Street banks or the Bank of England itself.

So if anyone should come across notes with slogans like "Stop Bush's War", "End Illegal Israeli Occupation", "Free Palestine", "Find A Peaceful Solution", "Don't Believe The Hype", "Not In My Name", "Don't Attack Iraq" etc etc. then they should pass it on as legal tender and hope that it doesn't encourage other people to start writing similar slogans on their own banknotes.

It would surely be a terrible thing if this turned into a mass campaign and the Bank had to replace all these notes and the Government would be worried by the obvious strength of anti-war feeling in the country. This would be an awful misuse and subvertion of the Capitalist currency system.

So I plead with you all not to start writing slogans on banknotes and not to tell as many people as possible to do likewise. I don't want to be seen as a troublemaker, and now that I'm aware that it is illegal I recind any previous requests for people to do this vandalistic and subvertive act that I may have posted on this site in my ignorance.

Peace.

Have you noticed how many brand new £5 notes there are in circulation these days? My guess is that the clearing banks have instructions to get the ones with uk.indymedia.org and stop the war out of circulation. We must do our best to help them! After all new banknotes are supposed to stay in circulation for many years ....

The new fivers have bio-metric tracking devices... see the shiny hologram? Soon you'll need a chip on your shoulder (or forehead) to entitle you to live, in this society.

Hiya buddy - care to explain what the bejesus you are on about regarding the biometric tracker? U trying to say that there are GPS tracking devices in the bank note - or that it takes a dna record of everyone that has touched the banknote?

all the new fivers are around because so many were withdrawn from circulation cos they were easy to forge and there was a ton of fakes around. the newer ones have more security devices inbuilt. oh i see... suppose these are the hidden transmitters right?
