October 31st Day of Protest:: Stop Your City - Stop The War!

stop the war coalition | 01.10.2002 08:13

On Thursday 31 October we are calling on everyone who opposes the war to organise:
Meetings in or near your workplace with anti-war speakers, perhaps with a local march.
College occupations and teach-ins.
In the evening join us for a central protest in the town where you live. Bring banners, sit down and block traffic.

Thursday the 31st of October has been declared a national day of action to stop the war by the stop the war coalition. People are being asked to organise local actions against the war in the towns and cities where they live.

Friends in England,

Please help us in the US! The UK is the only country perceived to be on the "side" of the US on attacking Iraq. If you can get the UK to back down, I don't think the US will be able to do it alone. We're trying everything we can over here, but we need your help too. Based on the polls, it seems that most people in the UK don't want this war, so maybe you'll have better luck than we are having. Please, please, please write your representatives, go to demonstrations, anything. Let's use this moment in history to show that we are all citizens of Earth, not just citizens of individual countries, and help each other out. War never leads to anything good for anyone.

Thank you from a grateful citizen of the US

stop the city stop the war

It was brilliant to see so many people on the streets of london on the 28th. I feel this was a good start. However I feel it will need much much more than a demonstration, however big, to change the plans for war that our government is putting into place. If the government sees that there is active dissent in this country, that in fact the country will be unrunable if they throw us into a war, then this will have an effect. In Brighton we are planning to Stop the City, both on the day of national action that has been called and also on the day that war begins. As a way to express our anger and to disrupt, shut down and take over the city. Imagine if on the declaration of war, the country stopped and said no. We are also orginising a legal demonstration with speakers, a public debate, childrens activities, a squatted centre to raise awareness and act as a point of meeting and activity and fun for all those involved. There is a lot of public support and interest out there, lets try to focus it!

The Media Effect

14.10.2002 08:00

Hullo friends out there,
There's something we might understand... I've been watching the media, and thier attitude to 'Bush-baby' and his obcene lust for war;
I think the media (TV and papers/magazines and radio) actually WANT there to be a war. After all, they like dramatic events, because they get a lot more viewers and sell more papers etc.
This seems terrible, but I believe it to be true, and a lot of media folk are quite cold and cynical enough to be thinking this way.
What can we do about this? One idea is to feed the media with as many Anti-War 'stories' (events etc) as we can make happen. Give them some drama of *our* own making, rather than let Bush and Blair & Co. hog the limelight!
Also we can contact the media when they don't broadcast Peace events, as they would not like to be (publicly) accused of reporting only gung-ho warmongering 'to boost their sales' methinks.
Just an idea folks!
Thanks to all of you who are sane enough to be protesting the war. Don't give up... it's not inevitable that Loony-tunes Bush will get his way. His edifice is built on shifting (and shifty!) sands... and he will crumble, sure as eggs are (rotten!) eggs!
Love and hugs to you all,
-'the Captain'
