US bombs civialian airport

BBC | 26.09.2002 15:13

Americans bomb civilian airport.

Iraq has meanwhile reported an attack by US warplanes on a civilian airport in Basra.

"American crows [planes] launched...on Wednesday night a new aggression when they attacked Basra international airport," said an official statement quoted on Iraqi television.

"The raids led to destroying the main radar system in the airport as well damaging the main service building."

A Pentagon official in Washington confirmed that there had been a strike early on Thursday, but gave no further details.

The US and Britain have enforced air exclusion zones since the 1991 Gulf War to protect Kurds in northern Iraq and Shiites in the south.

Air strikes have increased in recent weeks as the US steps up efforts to win international support for possible military action to overthrow the government in Baghdad.

"No Fly Zones" violate UN mandate

27.09.2002 02:45

The press & the public has to be reminded--for the 100th time--that the so-called No Fly Zone is an Imperialist concept that was unilaterally invented by the USA(& dutifully echoed by its running dog on Downing Street)to continue its aggression on Iraq. It was never sanctioned by the UN.

So in enforcing the NFZ, the Pentagon Britain's MoD are both violating the spirit of the UN sanctions on Iraq, and the only reason is that the murderous Yanks relies on its superiority in Weapons of Mass Destruction(WMD)to smash down any regime that Washington can't control.

that fact in itself proves the primary aggressor in the Iraq theatre is American Imperialism itself, so how can min-shrub claim any right to intervene to uphold UN resolutions?

The no-fly umbrella

27.09.2002 10:51

The no fly zone has done nothing to protect the Kurds in Northern Iraq bombed by our N.A.T.O. ally Turkey, nor prevented Saddams' genocide of the Marsh Arabs of Southern Iraq. This and sanctions have only served to weaken internal resistance and prolong the suffering of the Iraqi people. And now we're going to to bomb them again. One Bush (Blair, Saddam) , One Bullet.
