MTV: Enough is ENOUGH

Shemia Muhammad | 18.09.2002 13:29

MTV has chosen to prohibit Chuck D and Public Enemy from showing a Video because a political activist such as Mumia Abu-Jamal is shown briefly.

To:  MTV
My name is Shemia Muhammad, a member of Here-After Records. I am appalled by
MTV's choice to not play Public Enemy's video. I did not think Online petitions
were effective. Yet I am going to submit this one, because people from all over
the world use the computer, and people all over the world deserve to participate
in this method of freedom of speech. MTV has chosen to prohibit Chuck D
and Public Enemy from showing a Video because a political activist such as Mumia
is shown briefly. I say to MTV, how HYPOCRITICAL! MTV continues to show videos
that reek of lewd sexual nature and discussion of violence, drugs, violence
against women, in particular Black Women. MTV played, "Because I got high" over
and over again. I guess that song stayed in rotation because of the marketing
techniques of MTV. I am tired of the commercialism that goes on in
the music industry, and the vain profits that are gathered at the expense of our
youth, and community at large. I, Shemia Muhammad, at Here After Records
stand by Chuck D's initiative to speak the truth, and believe until MTV plays
the video, like BET then the Black community and those that respect Hip-Hop
should no longer watch its channel. If you find MTV's ban on Public
Enemy unfair, please join our petition.  http://www.hereafter-records.com

Sincerely,
The

MTV (shite) 100% Adverts

18.09.2002 14:22

apart from being utter shite MTV is 24hr non stop advertising. Our revolutionary black brothers have a taste for the finer things in live, so most of the RAP / Hip Hop videos are crammed with expensive cars, BMW and Mercedes
seemingly favourite, they all wear loads of Tom, rolex watches ect ect. then their is all the sweat shop sports wear
Nike Addidas ect ect and the list goes on and on.
The shows are hosted by the usual twats who look the same on MTV UK ; Germany France and all the rest, they just speaka the different language. MTV should be considered the education channel for activists . cos everything you see typifies a fucked up unsustainable capitalist lifestyle and should be boycotted.
From the RAP clowns to the dickhead music execs like the pratt from limp biscuit, not to mention King Dickhead BONO
and scores of other ego tripping wankers it's all just one big advert. Once they have got a hit they use it to sell you
piles of useless garbage designer lable bollox, fuck MTV up the arse !!!!!

Edward Bond said it once before when speaking of his play "Saved". Carrying on from the nature versus nurture debate in which there is the argument of wether attributes are inherited or not Brecht argued this only happens on a physical level. The rest is merely the passing on of knowledge from the earliest period of a child being raised.

So what does this have to do with MTV? Over decades branding has fought a war that few opposed because not enough people recognised how far branding would go in affecting different cultures across the world. Now there are people who subscribe to brands so much they buy their children tiny little official adidas trainers. And they will grow up knowing no different than to beleive that this defines their status. So if a symbol on a shoe can be used in such an aggressive marketing strategy of not letting a child know any different since birth then the same can happen with music- the more vulgar and uncreative a music industry becomes the more unquestioning the youths of that time period will become. Because it is their upbringing that quality is no longer in art itself but in the amount of promotion it receives. Then they say they pick their own music taste, dress the way they want, with an innocence and 100% feeling of freedom of choice.

Is it any wonder that MTV will ban even the slightest shred of non-capitalist material? Saying that a lot slips by them because they understand business and marketing, not art. But it won't save your children unless you lock them in a room for the first 10 years of they're life with a guitar and albums by The Doors and Jimi Hendrix. Its sad, but parents don't bring up they're kids, TV, adverts and trends do, and chances are the parents may have been too.
