A man has been found hanging in a police station cell.

The 23-year-old was discovered on Saturday at Lewisham police station in south-east London.

He had been arrested on Friday afternoon, on suspicion of going equipped to steal.

The man was charged and had been due to appear at Greenwich Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The Metropolitan Police voluntarily referred the investigation into the death to the independent Police Complaints Authority for supervision.

Authority member Duncan Gear said: "I went to the police station last night and met with the investigating team. The post-mortem will be held at Greenwich this morning.

"A full report on this tragic death will be submitted to HM Coroner, so that an inquest can be held in public."
