Warning: BNP have been posting with abandon today

Antifascist | 10.09.2002 08:23

The BNP woke up early again this morning. In the short term, these posts need to be hidden. In the long term, we need a strategy?

For the second morning I came to UK.indymedia.org to find that the British fascists had got there first. As one scrolls down, one will find a string of anti-immigrant, anti-African, anti-black, crime hysteria-mongering, posts under the names Anthony Milne and John Tyndall. These need to be removed from the visible newswire as usual.

But in the longer term, what should we do? It seems that they aim their postings for the early morning in order to command the newswire for the hours of the day until the administrator comes on. I hate to add more to the tech crew's responsibilities, but maybe they should have someone who does an early morning sweep? Or perhaps someone in an IMC tech crew a few time zones to the east or west might be given the early morning watch?

Thanks for pointing it out - it will be quicker if you note the story numbers ie.

then i can find them quickly - at the moment i have to read every post sent over night - and then hide the rascist ones... so give me a few minutes

Making it easier to report racist posts

10.09.2002 09:25

I feel there needs to be a more obvious way of Indymedia users to report posts that flout the editorial guidelines. At the moment, it isn't obvious who to contact or where to get the contact address. Could the collective perhaps debate this and possible solutions?

We should debate with them

11.09.2002 08:13

This is a free thinking forum anyone should be free to post. By the way the BNP are just another bunch of capitalists we should be against all capitalists not just the BNP. That means we should be against Labour Party members as well if they post on here and we should argue our points with them.

The best way to win people over to our ideas is to debate them with people! After all how many of us were born anti-capitalists?

no this isn't a free forum

This is a news wire for social justice, if most of the newswire is made up of rascist posts then the amount of readers goes down - they do not want to read it and it is offensive to many. You can go to many bulletin boards if you want to talk to fascists, or even better e-mail them direct! This site seems to me to have a specific function that they are trying hard to disrupt, lets not help them with a pathetic debate on censorship...

Pointless Debate

12.09.2002 23:27

It is absolutely pointless debating with racists, a waste of time and energy that could be better spent on more constructive activities.

The BNP and other racist groups have been actively targeting a whole number of on-line forums and bulletin boards, they have contributed to the closure of brixton.co.uk forum and have tried unsuccessfully to disrupt urban75.com, on most occasions debate has descended into the usual torrent of abuse from both sides.

The best way is to ban these people from posting on 'our' boards, they do not tolerate 'us' on their boards so why the hell should we be so welcoming.

I have better things to do with my time than try to inform a warped mind.
