SWP crosses M&S picket line in Manchester
Yesterday 31 August, two prominent SWP members entered the Market Street, Manchester branch of Marks and Spencer as some 15 people picketed the store calling for a boycott. Both members ignored the challenge of picketers in a clear demonstration that they regard their rights as middle-class shoppers and consumers far more highly than any gesture of solidarity with the people of Palestine. One of the members is the former Socialist Alliance candidate for Prestwich.
The SWP has always had an appalling record of support for liberation struggles. They have never done anything in support of the Irish people; they opposed any campaigning work in support of the struggle against apartheid. The record of their front organisation Campaign for Palestinian Rights is so ignominious it is begging to be able to dissolve it into the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC).
The campaign to boycott Marks and Spencer started in November 2000 with pickets of a number of branches including Manchester Market Street. M&S differs from companies such as Tesco's or Safeways in that its support for Zionism is a corporate objective. It has received an award from arch-fascist Benjamin Netanyahu for its backing.
The Manchester pickets, led by Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism!, are supported by the Manchester PSC and Muslim Public Affairs Committee. They continue to take place every Saturday between 12:00 and 2:00pm, and we urge you to show your support by joining the picket and refusing to shop with the company.
Isolate the Zionist state!
Boycott Israeli goods!
Boycott Marks and Spencer!
Victory to the Intifada
