The next summit of the world's seven wealthiest countries and Russia -- known as the Group of Eight, or G8 -- is to be held in early June 2003 in the fashionable French spa of Evian-les-Bains, at the foot of the Alps by the Geneva's lake

French President Jacques Chirac, whose turn it is to host the gathering, informed current G8 chairman and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien of his choice of location, a spokesman for Chirac, Frederic Desgneaux, said.

The other countries that make up the exclusive club -- Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States -- were told at the same time, he added.

The last G8 summit was held June 26-27 in Kananaskis, an isolated resort in the Canadian Rockies heavily protected to stop anti-globalisation protesters from mobbing it, as happened at the previous one last year in Genoa, Italy.

Evian-les-Bain -- on the southern shores of Lake Geneva near the Swiss border and home to the Evian mineral water bottling company -- was selected "for its magnificent site and because it provides an environment favourable to reflection for the heads of state and government," Desagneaux said.

Chirac also intended to repeat the informal nature of the Canadian summit, at which normally bloated delegations were whittled down to more manageable sizes at Chretien's urging, he said.

France plans to associate the G8 summit with an EU-Russia summit that will be held just before, on May 31 next year, in Saint Petersburg, which will be celebrating the 300th anniversary of its establishment as the capital of Tsarist Russia.

The leaders of the 15 EU states and Russia will be joined in Saint Petersburg by their Japanese and US counterparts for the event.

"Everybody will leave that evening or the next morning so that the G8 (summit) can start in France probably early afternoon on the 1st of June. So it will probably take place the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of June," Desagneaux said.

More info : Geneva (Switzerland) is at 45 Km (28 Miles) from Evian. Geneva is the closest "big" city has the closest aeroport to Evian so they might land in Geneva and take the helicopters to Evian. Geneva is also the location of a lot of capitalists institutions (wto, imf, wef etc.. and big intrenational firms )

Evian is by the lake side at the feet of the alps and at 40 km west there is the swiss boarder and on the est there is also the swiss boarder.
