US Rogue Empire Building 1776-20?? : A Pattern of Increasing Criminal Behavior

The US has committed many war crimes since its founding. The genocide of many Native American tribes (1776-20??); then the worst case of government sanctioned war crimes since 1944: Vietnam-Cambodia-Laos with 5-6 million - mostly civilian - dead and dying (1945-200?); the next, and hopefully the last, US supported tragedy will soon strike the predominately Arab nation of Iraq with another million civilians massacred on top of the million who died in Iraq I (1990-2002).

Where’s the Stealth:?
Until recently, the US has kept its culpability in war crimes secret or unproved for many years (Indonesia/East Timor, Chile, Angola, Iran, Guatemala, et. al). With Nicaragua, Afghanistan and Colombia this caution and subterfuge has given way to flagrant violations of International Law and criminal acts that have been openly admitted to.

The US claims of national security and self defense, indeed the entirety of US foreign policy, does not legally justify most of its actions. The openly illegal basis of US foreign policy since the Contra intervention in Nicaragua has required the US to withdraw from the World Court (1986) and to strongly oppose the International Criminal Court (ICC). The US is so desperate to avoid war crimes trials for its former presidents and military that it has resorted to blackmail. Poor countries are being told to sign immunity guarantees for US troops or face blacklisting and the forfeiture of foreign and military aid. The US has applied pressure on Europe and the UN Security Council threatening to pull out peace keepers and funding worldwide. The EU has begun to stand up to these threats.

The US can no longer escape public opinion and the actions of the US will now be tried openly before the world.

There is substantial documentation of US War Crimes in Colombia. Much of this evidence comes directly from reports and testimony by the DEA, the Treasury Department and the State Department. The US cannot deny that it is aware of its direct and indirect funding of drug trafficker connected terrorist organizations that commit thousands of murders every year. Now that the US has dropped its pretense of fighting “The War on Drugs,” it is more open to charges of financing and arming the criminal organizations that support the Colombian State and its military. This a military that the US refused to give aid to for much of the period 1980-1996 because of drug corruption and gross human rights violations. It is an army that the State Department and US Congress have had to restrict drug war funding away from most of its tainted brigades.

The US has now come out in the open with a policy of funding a counter insurgency war against the guerrillas who obviously have some legitimate complaints about power-sharing and the possibility of democracy in Colombia. In mid August the new President Uribe has shown his designs and broken his campaign promise to protect human rights abuses by his government. Most of Uribe’s high level appointments have gone to known members of paramililitary organizations who are also tolerant of some of the largest drug producing and trafficking groups in the world.

Alfredo Castro, in an article published on August 15, presents inumerable connections of Uribe’s recent appointee to the position of Director of the Confiscated Assets Agency (Dirección Nacional de Estupefacientes):Luis Alfonso Plazas Vega . Other similar appointments of criminals made by Uribe Velez in the past week include: Ricardo Cifuentes to head the Colombian penal system known as INPEC and Carlos Alberto Ospina to head the Colombian army. The appointments of General Mora and General Alvaro Velandia Hurtado are more evidence of violent intent by Uribe and backed up by the US. Many more examples are being compiled now that the pretense of respectability is no longer necessary with the Colombian Congress essentially suspended under Uribe’s version of Marshall Law.

As a leader of the CUT federation of trade unions stated at the beginning of this article :

The lawsuits being prepared against the US, businesses, arms suppliers and Colombian individuals will expose the direct and intimate working-relationships between US foreign aid and foreign policy with major international criminal organizations and terrorists. But time is of the essence and concerned people all around the world must cry out now against the US continuing to fund the murderous government of Colombia. Demand of your political representatives and governments at all levels to support OAS, UN, EU and other resolutions condemning the US and Colombian governments. Demand inquiries and support the many lawsuits that are pending. Do something.

Stop these criminal US policies in Colombia that have already killed at least 100,000 people in the last 14 years and which threaten the ecology of the Amazon basin and the lives of 100,000s peasants, small farmers and workers throughout the Andean region.
