Parents at St Johns nursery, Hackney, are asking people to come to a festival of resistance on Saturday 31 August as part of a campign to contest the closure of the nursery by the council.

Parents and children at St John's nursery in central Hackney will hold a festival of resistance at the nursery from 2pm to 6pm on Saturday 31 August. There will be other activities in the days leading up to this as the council moves to close the nursery. The council is closing the nursery after a period of fake consultation in order to "save" £190,000 from the early years budget. Parents, staff and carers are outraged at this closure of a wonderful facilty which provides care, fun and education for over 40 children. Hackney council can lavish huge amounts on privatised companies which then fail the borough, yet there is no money for crucial services. The Learning Trust which took over education on 1 August has so far refused to intervene to stop the closure. We have lobbied, protested, demonstrated and marched. Now we are not going quietly. Please offer any help you can with music, food or anything else. Above all please come yourself and enjoy an afternoon on fun and politics. Children are especially welcome. The nursery is close to St Johns church which is near the police station in Lower Clapton Road.
