PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT IN SOUTH AFRICA
STOP THE POWER CUT OFFS, DON'T LET TREVOR NGWANE AND HIS COMRADES GO TO JAIL
On Thursday 15 August 87 anti-privatisation activists from the Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee in Johannesburg, SA are up in court. They are accused of public violence, assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm and malicious damage to property after a demonstration against electricity cut-offs in the city. The campaign in SA is an inspiring part of the world-wide struggle against neo-liberalism and the horrors it brings. Last year Trevor Ngwane spoke at the launch of the Trade Justice Movement in London. He was incredibly inspiring. He is one of the 87 in court in a fortnight. It's plain that 87 people didn't commit the crimes they stand accused off, the mayor's house is still standing, what's happening is an attack on the strongest movement SA has seen since the defeat of apartheid. The ANC government are also keen to keep the lid on things as the Johannesburg Earth Summit comes up in early September.
The SECC have called for an international day of action against the trial. In response, Globalise Resistance has called a picket of South Africa House from 4.30pm. War on Want have confirmed their support, and other organisations are being approached.
There are more details on the website: www.resist.org.uk.
