The UK's Top Terrorist Targets - GCHQ

Warning Signal | 28.07.2002 18:47

There are a number of high profile Terrorist Targets
within the UK. GCHQ is one such target but, in a uniquely
British way, the terrorist threat is not being taken seriously.

GCHQ is the UK's "Top Secret Spybase", located in
Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. It provides vital services
to UK government departments and military commands
in support of the government's security, defence, foreign
and economic policies. It was made famous during the
1980's when Mrs. Thatcher banned Trade Union Membership
there. GCHQ has strong links with the USA's National
Security Agency (NSA).

From the terrorist's point of view GCHQ is a "sitting duck". There are thousands of staff working in two sprawling complexes located on either side of Cheltenham town centre. Worse still, there is a great deal of housing immediately surrounding both sites. GCHQ's security is lax by any standard and there are few provisions made to guard against a major terrorist strike.

The immediate impact of a major terrorist strike on GCHQ
would be enormous with thousands of potential victims.
In addition, with GCHQ compromised, the security of
the whole of the UK could be affected for a very long time.

How vunerable do you think GCHQ is ?

How far reaching do you think the consequences
of a successful major attack would be ?

What is being done to protect the staff and public
in light of the probability of such an attack ?

If you were one of the 5,000 staff how keen would
you be continue your career at GCHQ after such an
attack had taken place ?
