TIMELINE FOR NOBORDER CAMP STRASBURG
Thursday 25th July
Around 100 NoBorder Camp activists defied the ban on assemblies and marched to the police station in solidarity with the prisoners of the 25th.

Today after a long night of discussion and meetings at the camp several small actions and a larger prison solidarity protest went ahead despite all Noborder protests being declared illegal.
Some pictures of the events of the day (Thursday), after the repression of yesturdays action. The activities of the No-border camp had been declared illegal after scuffles and clashes with the french police in the city centre.
Around 13:00 a dozen activists from the Publix Theatre Caravan, indymedia austria and indymedia uk were removed from the Strasbourg city centre. When arriving for their daily noborder zone street interventions and radio shows, the busses were awaited by more than ten police vans and busses and told to go to the noborder camp or have their radio bus confiscated. This evening (11pm)after the days events in Strasbourg, all demonstrations and actions related to the Noborder campaign have been declared illegal in Strasbourg, where the international action camp has been running for almost one week.

After two days of peaceful and festive demonstrations,actions, street theatre and performances in Strasbourg, today police have attacked a demonstration against a migrant`s dtention centre in Strasbourg city centre. Confirmed reports of heavy clashes with police are coming from the NoBorder Camp radio stream.
Tuesday 23th July The Strasbourg border-camp has seen some successful collaboration between the pink-silver samba band and the so-called 'black block'. A common demonstration followed a street theatre action on Tuesday. Report

I arrived yesterday afternoon. There are between 2000-3000 activists here from all over Europe, not just German or French, but also large contigents of Italians, Spanish, Dutch and English. It is amazing to see the how the no
border camp concept has grown since the first one took place in 1998
The idea of the no border camp grew out of the (German) No One Is Illegal campaign, which was launched at Documenta X in July 1997 (inspired by the French Sans Papiers movement). There are now a multitude of border camps taking place all over Europe and beyond, for instance Tijuana/Mexico and Woomera/Australia (www.woomera2002.com).

The understanding of what borders are and where they should be located has emerged from actual borders of nation states to all sorts of borders such as detention centres, international airports and now, here in Strasbourg, the SIS European central police computer.
The camp here in Strasbourg started a few days ago. Today there is a demonstration at the International Court for Human Rights. The big demonstration is this Saturday and will go to the place where the central European mainframe computer is located that registers all foreigners,
refugees, migrants etc that (try to) enter the Schengen fortress of Europe.
The presence of independent media on the camp has exploded in a spectacular way over the last few years. I am now sitting in the radio tent which has a 50 watt transmitter and netcasts simultaneously, 24 hours a day. There is a
double DSL connection (landline), and a wireless WiFi network. The ASCII group from Amsterdam, together with lots of other net activist groups is offering public access terminals in a special tent. There are a great number
of video groups, for instance AKKRAAK from Berlin and Organic Chaos (www.organicchaos.org).
There will be a few workshops related to tactical media, net activism, and a debate how to link the freedom of movement with the freedom of communication

The whole media zone here at the camp has been coined 'Sillicon Valley', a somewhat ironical/provocative term because there is some resistance amongst activists against the independent media initiatives. Anti-media elements
have accused the net activists of 'sheltering' mainstream journalists. There is a fierce debate going on at the moment about the presence of cameras and microphones.

Monday morning 1171 participants of the international noborder camp in Strasbourg demonstrated in front of the European Court of Human Rights. The march went from the campsite in the Prac du Rhin to the court and further into the city center [Place Kleber]. Not respecting the summer
vacation of the European Institutions, representatives of refugee and migrants organizations read out long accusations, criticizing the Immigration and asylum policies of the European Union.
Especially the German Residenzpflicht, that prohibits refugees to leave their place of residence, but also other human rights violations that affect refugees where presented in a number of reports from different cities across Europe. During the second part of the demonstration the participants shortly occupied the place in front of the European Council. The empty flag-poles that normally display the flags of the member countries were spontaneously used in to give the protestors' banner more visibility.
At the end of a noisy and colorful demonstration through the city center three participants were arrested. Currently a large number of participants is present in front of the police station demanding their release.]
