Ezz al-Din al-Qassam was an Islamic militant who fought the French in Syria and the British in Palestine. He became known as the Palestinians' first feda'i . Born in Syria around 1880, he studied in Cairo's al-Azhar University. Following the French occupation of Syria, he participated in guerrilla activities (1919­1920) for which he was sentenced to death by a French court. He escaped to Palestine where he taught at an Islamic school and a year later was appointed as a preacher in Haifa. He became convinced that Britain was facilitating Jewish immigration to Palestine as well as the inevitable creation of a Jewish homeland there. He thus began to call for a popular uprising against the British.

In 1928 he founded the Young Men's Muslim association which with the Boy Scouts organised military drills and the stockpiling of arms and initiated attacks on Jewish settlements (1931­1933). In November 1935, he left Haifa with 10 followers to seize a British police arsenal. An unplanned incident alerted the police who chased the group. Rather than escape or surrender, Qassam and his men fought it out. He and two of his companions were killed. Overnight, he became a symbol of martyrdom for the Palestinians. Half a century later his legacy continues to inspire Palestinian groups, especially those with religious ideologies. For example, the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas set up a military wing called the Kata'ib (brigades) Izz al-Din al-Qassam.
