Youth Culture 2002 - In the Inner cities.
*i write this as a 16 year old

First i'll talk about the current situation, The UK govt has just launched a big crackdown on street crime, the majority of this 'street-crime' (street crime can mean many things) is caused by people aged 21 or under.
The motives behind thiese crimes are often lack of money, the need for money for things, not necesserily life-enhancing things, but things to pass away time, i.e -different sort of drugs. Has life become that cheap for the youth today, that all they have to look forward to is when they'll next chong out of a bong, or when they'll get their next pill. I'm not fuckin suprised, all kids know today are shopping malls, computer games, gold chains etc, etc. Another big part is that so many youngsters want more status among their fellow people, especially among males.
Their is no youth unity today, like their was lets say 25 years ago (with the punk movement and all),the breakdown and the fragmentation of society has partly contributed to that fact.
Kids don't feel and sense the way the worlds going, because their lives are filled with hate and boredom. School really is crap for most of todays youth, because the same routine every day gets tedious, and they have to accept that this will be the way it is when they grow up and get a job, no fuckin' wonder society has broke down. Society is becoming alienated, though they may not know it, kids are suddenly realising that their dreams and aspirations have very little chance of materialising, and this is causing alot of frustration and division.
They don't fight the source of the problem (unlike the black youth of the 70's and 80's who rose up against the forces that be), they are too busy fighting each other.
I hope i can try and communuicate to people my age, but i'm not that optimistic. I'd love to see another 'brixton 81' soon. A mixed race youth riot might just be enough to get people thinking.
