STILL NO OUTCOME TO THE LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL LED ROPE WALKS FRAUD INVESTIGATIO

Mike Lane | 16.07.2002 10:16

It would seem that as well as the local media in Liverpool, the national media also, is ignoring the issue of fraud and misappropriation of regeneration funding on Merseyside. Is there a massive cover up?

For over two years now a Liverpool City Council regeneration agency called Rope Walks has been under investigation by the European Commission fraud squad OLAF, yet the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo have given this issue hardly any coverage. Surely this give even more authenticity to the fact that the Liverpool Echo works to the analogy that nothing must be said or done that could harm the long-term existence of regeneration funding on Merseyside. It matters little whether regeneration funding is being misappropriated, better to have the money and make a mess of it rather than have no money at all. Already there are cries of a cover up. A veil of silence surrounds this corruption issue and certain councillors and high-ranking council officer wish that it would just go away. How long will the beleaguered people of Liverpool and Merseyside have to suffer before this travesty is given national coverage? Fraud, in all its insidious forms, is now common practice amongst regeneration agencies in Liverpool and right through the region of Merseyside as a whole
