Shadows of 'that night': the struggle for justice for Bhopal

A letter from Indra Sinha, pleading for justice for the victims of the Union Carbide gas disaster in India.

We have one week in which to persuade the Indian government to change its mind. Three campaigners for justice for the victims of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal are on hunger strike in New Delhi. They are protesting against the Indian government's plan to dilute charges against the ex-CEO of Union Carbide who has been officially 'absconding from justice for 11 years. Carbide was recently acquired by Dow Chemical, and although Carbide has no assets remaining in India which the court could seize, Dow has. There can be no doubt that what is being planned is a monstrous injustice, an attempt to bury the Bhopal issue to appease the giant corporation and the US government. We must stop it. Time is precious. The hunger strikers are in danger and the court hearing is Wednesday 17th July 2002.
