Unusual suggestion for a Transformation of Society

The Organization | 10.07.2002 14:32

It dawned on me that most socialists are failing to address the property question, even though it screams from every headline now. I throw open the following suggestion for comment:

"Who rules in Britain ? Property rules" wrote Marx, a long time ago now. It suddenly dawns on me that to achieve a fundamental change against society, and break the power of property capitalism, you must get the support of mortgage payers.
Perhaps theyre not socialists ? Who is, in Britain ? But All kinds of people are on mortgage now, rich, poor, workers, bourgeois. So, people will only come over to socialism if they see a benefit for their own lives, so any group wanting to get mass support must pledge to break the mortgage, by cancelling all debt, and taking the freehold in return for giving the occupant a free leasehold in perpetuity, including rights of inheritance. This means, effectively, the abolition of property-capital. What an idea.
