Message from the Chairman

Nowadays, businesses are increasingly dealing with the global marketplace not only from the perspective of creating value for the business itself, but also from the standpoint of attempting to facilitate the development of a sharp focus on social issues.

Banks are placed at the center of a system of relationships which closely link governmental institutions, private-sector companies, financial intermediaries and physical persons. In particular, by financing economic activity and distributing added value, banks are poised to take an active role in helping to steer production and consumption toward a new concept of shared social responsibility.

This is the objective which we as a Bank propose aim at pursueing. A strong commitment is needed in this regard, in order to develop the cultural change essential for creating an adequate focus on social challenges. The MPS Group intends to affirm such a commitment as a primary objective in its new 2001-2004
Business Plan which, in emphasizing the innovation of organizational units and operations mechanisms, acknowledges this strategic orientation by means of an overall redefinition of the business areas.

We are equally convinced that any firm interested in being a market leader must make a move on these issues, placing particular attention on disclosing its actions through efficient communications.

We believe that the exchange of information has become a critical element in the business world today, and that the only way for a business to succeed and to create added value over time is through continuous and transparent dialogue with its various stakeholders.

Banks are no exception to this rule, and the shift toward transparency in relationships with the market and with stakeholders today looks quite evident and irreversible.

Responding to these considerations, the Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena has created this Annual Statement of Social Responsibility as a tool for analyzing, measuring, evaluating and managing the exchange of qualitative and quantitative communication between the Bank and its stakeholders.

The document also provides a comprehensive account of the Bank's activities over the past year.By using the information provided in the financial statements and the simultaneously published Environmental Report, the Annual Statement of Social Responsibility is a testimony of the Bank's commitment to extend its operating horizons toward developing a more mature and responsible corporate profile.
In this manner, the Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, which has long been dedicated to making life better in the territory it serves, aspires to establish itself as a financial institution where customers have the guarantee of quality service, where employees are actively involved in pursuing corporate goals, and where the organization as a whole expresses the values and principles which serve as the foundation for the business.

The decision to start with the publication of the Annual Statement of Social Responsibility this year is a step toward continuous improvement of the Bank's performance. This performance serves to benefit not only the Bank, but also the interests of all of the stakeholders.

With this Annual Statement of Social Responsibility, we aim to build confidence and to create constructive dialogue with the market in order to make our commitment more effective over time. Accordingly, we invite readers to submit any feedback or commentary which they might feel appropriate in this regard.
