Five cents a day: our generosity.

New UNCTAD estimate for western aid per person.

This figure is from the new UNCTAD LEAST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES
REPORT 2002, published by the UN Conference on Trade and Development. It is online at

 http://www.unctad.org/en/pub/ps1ldc02.en.htm

In Part One, Table 7 estimates total 'western' aid per recipient, it is the only such estimate I know. The table gives NET ODA INFLOWS INTO LDCS FROM ALL DONORS, 1994–2000. ODA is Overseas Development Aid, LDC is Least Developed Country.

Real net ODA per capita (prices in 1999 $) was $29.0 in 1994. By the year 2000 it had fallen to $20.2.

That is five-and-a-half dollarcent per person per day, or 6 eurocent per person per day. That is how much 'we' are prepared to share 'our' wealth. The underlying problem is that the rich countries are democracies, and the voters are simply not prepared to give more. Full global equality of income would require income taxes of 80% or 90% in the richer countries. Try getting elected on that platform.
