Basque Country: Women repressed in Irun

Xare | 30.06.2002 07:08

Irun celebrates a traditional parade from which women are excluded. A group of women are trying to break this discrimination but encountering local's bigotry and the police is trying to keep them out.

From 100 years ago Irun celebrates its' traditional march of "San Marcial" on june the 30th.

The march segregates women and from 6 years ago a small group of women and men are trying to change the discriminatory celebration.

Today early in the morning a group of men and women playing the traditional music with flutes and drums went into the place where the parade starts. The police has removed them from the place. The presence of the ertzaintza (basque police) is very strong in the place.

Yesterday, 19th of june, women got arrested while trying to join a men's only parade.
