You can see it in operation on those late evening audince qustion-time shows, or on phone-ins. When it becomes clear the public consensus is overwhelming, and especially when its an enlightened opinon, the debate controller will start to fish around for a dissenting voice.
the mentality goes very deep; even as a student, forced to work in groups on compiling policy and taking opinion polls, the poor little dears were so, so anxious to find the lone, isolated reactionary among the public, even though technically distorting the surveys. it can also work in the opposite way, so that predominantly centrist magazines and newspapers carry quite left-wing views, such as john pilger.
