June 25 was the day of Juan Ramón's extradition trial. The Catalonian protest singer was arrested in a squat in Amsterdam 17 January, because he was wanted by the Spanish police in connection with investigations into the separatist Basque group ETA. Juanra has been in isolation in a Dutch prison since.
Against the will of the procecutor and defence, the judge decided to postpone the case. He acknowledged that after the arrest five months ago, the Spanish state's accusation of his links to ETA is still unclear, vague and contradictionary. The accusation has been changed five times. Questions of the Dutch court have been left unanswered and important files suddenly disappeared while they were available before. Spain has now been given a last chance to come up with a clear accusation with convincing evidence.
In response, Juanra's lawyer Victor Koppe demanded that Juanra, who has spent the past five months in isolation in a jail in Vught, should await his next trial in freedom as it is not Juanra's mistake that Spain cannot get its story right. After a long time of consideration the judge stated that Juanra will be free on a temporary basis till the next trial. A bail of 20.000 euros is demanded and he has to hand in his passport and drivers licence. He is expected to be free before the weekend. The next trial date will probably be somewhere in August.
