Demonstrate Against Asylum Bill

Wednesday 12th June 2002
7.00 pm
Assemble outside the House of Commons, St Sephens Gate, opposite the statue of Winston Churchill

Protesters will be outside parliament tonight to protest at the third reading of the 'Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Bill''. They will be demanding that the bill is scrapped and will lobby all MP's to vote against the bill.

"The Nationality, Immigration & Asylum Bill is all about making it harder for asylum seekers to claim their rights under the Geneva Convention. This is the fourth asylum bill in the last ten years and all of them have failed to make the asylum process fairer or more open and all have made the lives of asylum seekers worse." John Stewart, NCADC

The most controversial part of the bill, 'Segregation in education of asylum seeking children', came before parliament yesterday. Due to government 'bullying' there was no debate on the clause, even though 131 MPs have made public their opposition to this part of the bill. Neil Gerrard, said Britons would not understand why the Commons had been prevented from debating the issue of the most interest to the public.

If you cannot make it to the protest you can still make your voice heard. Fax you MP and insist they vote against the bill.
