The IMF Squeezes & Africa's Malawi Starves

'' Malawi's leader, President Bakili Muluzi has repeated accusations that the International Monetary Fund worsened the food shortage.

Malawi is pursuing a structural adjustment programme and the IMF advised that the country sell its grain reserves to repay its debts, Mr Muluzi told the BBC.

Muluzi says the IMF recommended sale of maize The IMF has denied making these recommendations.

Mr Muluzi said that if the IMF had not told Malawi to sell off its reserve stocks of maize, there would be enough to feed those whose crops had failed.

"We were advised by the IMF, to say 'You cannot keep this maize when you owe the banks money. Sell the maize and repay them'," he told the BBC's Alastair Leithead at the World Economic Forum in Durban. ''

'' The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has withheld US$47 million out of US$55 million aid meant for a three-year Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility following government failure to fulfil the programme's conditions.

IMF Resident Representative Girma Begashaw said in a written response that the Fund released only US$8 million out of the US$55 million, holding back the rest because of government failure to implement agreed reforms.

He said the disbursement of the remaining US$47 million was originally scheduled to take place within three years of concluding reviews of implementation by the Malawi Government of macroeconomic and structural reforms. ''

I don't think it's racist. It's just imperialist. I think most people who work for it don't even realise that that is its function. They think that what they are doing is worthwhile and helpful. They think they are helping the "developing world".

But they're so brainwashed with neo-liberal ideology that they don't realise what they're doing.

anti-IMF(etc) STREET PARTY! June 22nd

If you don't like the IMF or World Bank or WTO then come to a street party in cambridge on saturday june 22nd.

It's simultaneously a celebration of life and reclamation of the streets... and a protest against capitalism and corporate globalisation and war and all the rest of it.

There'll be quite a few apolitical people there who have come just for fun.

It would be great if plenty of well informed people also turned up to chat to them about the political aspects of what this party is about.


Please come to the street party everyone.
Bring juggling balls / clubs / drums / whistles / musical instruments... or just your happy smiley selves and all your mates.

Dress in anti-capitalist colours (whatever that means to you) or whatever you want :-)

J22 is going to be massive.

Seriously, please come to this. Stuff like Mayday is great but for the movement to progress we need local events to really take off. Loads of local people are already coming, as there has been a big stickering and flyering and leafleting campaign, but as local events of this type are still in their infancy it would be great if some people came from further afield to give their support and add to the numbers and make it even more of a success.
