Prk Nook is a 3 acre of mature woodland in Toxteth, Liverpool. It is the only wildspace in an impovervished inner city area but is under threat from developers who want to build luxury flats. Developers have chopped down several trees, but were stopped by local residents, who set up a protest camp four weeks ago.

Park Nook is a 3 acre area of mature woodland - the only wildspace in Toxteth. 3 years ago, developers fenced off the land in order to build luxury flats. A picnic was held to protest about this - at the time we thought it was part of the park. Over 100 local people turned up, and during the course of the day, the fence came down and a protest camp was set up.

A legal battle was fought to save the land (by registering it as a town green), but was lost last autumn. Four weeks ago, the developers came and chopped down several mature trees. Two women stopped the use of the JCB by lying underneath it and work with the chainsaws stopped a few hours later when around 30 local people gathered on the land. Now locals are currently occupying the land again to prevent the developers from destroying Park Nook.

Why save Park Nook?

It is the only area of wild land in Toxteth, and provides a garden to locals, many of whom have no gardens of their own.

It has been used by local people for birdwatching, blackberry picking, etc for over 30 years, and generations of children have played there.

It is home to over 40 species of birds, including song thrushes and blackbirds which are in decline, also rabbits, bats and foxes.

Recently, we have found out that there is a folly at Prk Nook - possibly part of an underground grotto. There was a house there in the 19th century, and the person (Rev Martineau) who built the house and lived there built the folly and (we think) a grotto for his children to play in. He was a friend of Willamson, who built a network of tunnels to provide work for men who were unemployed after the Napoleaonic wars. The Williamson tunnels are being restored by Friends of Willamsons tunnels (www.williamsontunnels.com)- and will form part of Liverpool's heritage. The tunnels at Park Nook are an important link with Liverpool's past, and should be protected.

We need support - please come and visit us! We are trying to beautify the area that the developers destroyed, and recently a garden and picnic area has been made on the cleared area of the land.
