Worldwide protest against data retention!

Twister | 26.05.2002 19:48

Do you want your private and intimate communication data be stored just in case it might be possible to use it against you sometime? No? Neither do thousands of other people - support them!

Thousands of netizens signed in against general data retention of electronic communications data. More than 9000 people signed an Open Letter of international civic organizations to the members of the EU Parliament within a few days. They express their rejection of a general and suspicion independent data retention of their connection data that the EU council was planning. The signers endorse the conservation of the highest values of every democracy: freedom of expression and privacy. A systematic and preventive tracking and logging of communications and connection data of every EU citizen would undermine those fundamental rights. It would render the presumption of innocence, a basic democratic principle, a farce. Until May 28th 2002, 12:00 CEST everyone who wants to speak up against this blatant breach of privacy has a chance to do so by signing the Open Letter at http://www.stop1984.com/index2.php?text=letter.txt The secrecy of communications is a inalienable part of fundamental human rights. When permitted, data retention must be a necessary, appropriate, proportionate and temporary measure. It has to be limited to what is absolutely necessary and according to laws in a democratic society. A blanket retention of all communications data for hypothetical and future criminal investigations would not respect these basic conditions. For these reasons the signers request that general data retention is to be rejected.
