Lets hav a protest for Kashmir and Gujarat

Mr Gimp | 19.05.2002 13:44

What about the genocide in kashmir and Gujarat, lets bloody protest about it, leftists and anti-capitalists need to take these issues on as well as Palestine.

In Kashmir, the Indian army has been commtting atrocities which are worse then Israeli war crimes against the Palestinians and which are comparable to the Serbs in Bosnia. The media remains completely silent and everytime they manage to produce some coverage they reduce it to coverage of the conflict between the governments India and Pakistan, we never get to hear the views of the Kashmiri people and what they want, in fact there is very little direct coverage from Kashmir.

One must not forget that India in recent times has seen the rise of Hindu fundamentalism and nationalism with the BJP which means more persecution for Muslims not only in Kashmir but also in Gujarat where once again the media coverage has been crap. There was no religious riot in Gujarat, it was more of a massacre of Muslims by right wing Hindu fanatics. Thousands of Muslims have been massacred in Gujarat, men, women and children have lost their lives, homes and 100,000 people are crammed into relief camps. In fact there is even less coverage of Indian war crimes in other regions such as Assam and Jalistan.

Progressive minded people need to take these issues on, leftists have to stop support the Kashmiri peoples right to separate whether it means independence or unification with Pakistan. When supporting national liberation struggles, leftists, anarchists and anti-capitalists need to remember that it is up to the Kashmiri people, the Palestinian people or the Kurdish people as to the grounds of their liberation from the state forces which brutalise their communities. Therefore all the ideological class based dogma needs to be put aside for ideas which acknowledge the needs human beings in these situations.

Furthermore leftists, anarchists, and anti-capitalists need to stop moaning about Islamic fundamentalism, as at many times it ends up being nothing more then an excuse to attack all Muslims and Islam because of biased and sometimes bigoted anti-religious feelings. The Kashmiri struggles is not one which is hijacked by Pakistani, ISI trained Islamic militants, we should stop believing the media propoganda, although such tendencies exist they are foreign minority movements which have little connection to the Kashmiri people who have been struggling for years. We need to make efforts to seek out the truth and seek out those people we can work with and who are involved in the struggle against Hindu fundamentalism.

Lets have a protest outside the Indian embassy or perhaps a mass march as big as the pro-Palestine demonstrations. The Palestinians are no different from the Kashmiris therefore they deserve the same solidarity.

I dont think that one person can do very much, I agree with Mr Gimp that leftists and radicals need to do there research and get information on the issue of Kashmir, also they need to look towards the groups and individuals who are already working on the issue of Kashmir such as the World Kashmir Freedom Movement.

Arms trade again

Not to forget that the Kashmir issue is particularly pressing on UK activists given the fact that our UK arms sales to India are something like £122 million worth since 1999. This to a country who, according to a US State Department report released in 1995 are responsible for torture, kidnapping, extrajudicial killing, rape and use of excessive force against the population of the region and support paramilitary forces responsible for various human rights abuses in the region.

There needs to be a protest ...

What has been happening in Gujurat is akin to ethnic cleansing, and Kashmir has been a continuing tragedy for more than 50 years. India does have its oppositional voices (check www.india.indymedia.org) and these should be supported abroad. The BJP is a fundamentalist regime, based on a doctrine of Hindu supremacy called "hindutva". They are angling a good old fashioned war with Pakistan (under nice dictator Musharraf) and we should do what we can to draw people's attention to this and oppose it. Shouting at the Indian Embassy seems a good start!
