Dan Rather on Newsnight

rikki | 19.05.2002 12:33

I'm dissappointed that there has not been much comment about Dan Rather's 'coming out'. I am not surprised that the mainstream media has done its best to bury it, but I am feeling that I dreamt the whole piece that I saw on Newsnight during the week as I haven't seen any mention of it anywhere.

For anyone that didn't see it, Dan Rather is a senior and well respected anchorman for CNN News who has broken rank and launched an amazing tirade against news reporting in the States. He has admitted his own culpability and made an apology for the lack of real information about US agression abroad. He complains that the media provides "militainment" about troops stationed in Afghanistan and elsewhere, and yet there is very little real information available. He describes the pressure to confom that journalists are under and basically tells the US people to wake up and see what is really going on.

Now if this were Pilger or Chomsky et al, we'd all nod knowingly and expect the news to be buried, but this was fucking Dan Rather!!! That's like Trevor McDonald or Michael Buerk standing up in the UK and saying "most of what I've been telling you is manipulative deceit and it's time you stopped believeing me and found out exactly what's really going on".

Did anyone else see this Newsnight report and has anyone heard about any follow-up/repercussions etc.? I'm kind of waiting to hear that Rather has been taken off air and comitted to a mental asylum or something? Is he still broadcasting?

Rather more lying propagandists

The main stalwarts of the establishment propaganda media, realising that some truths about what's been going on is trickling in to the mainstream media, are obviously worried about their role in suppressing those truths - perhaps that is why Rather has come out at this juncture - to pre-empt that exposure of the crucial part that he and others like him have played in the game - betting that he can claim that he was the first to admit it and should therefore be excused.
