Race Prof at Sussex Uni claims Observer
www.observer.co.uk | 15.05.2002 14:26
Shock allegation of an an openly racialist professor at Sussex university was reported in Sundays Observer. This should get wider coverage, and perhaps prospective students should consider applying elsewhere.
Last Sundays Observer reported that Professor Graham Sampson, a professor at Sussex University and also a councillor, stated on his website that "theres nothing wrong with racism" and "there is overwhelming scientific evidence that races differ to some extent in their average intelligence levels..." and "if I am told I am a racist, I dont splutter indignant denials... I just say racialist, actually" and "it was scientifically hard to disagree that negroes were less bright than whites"
Would you want this man assessing your thesis ?
It is shocking to find such attitudes, devoid of any tact or common sense, among the academic fraternity. What is more depressing is the lack of those professors prepared to state the opposite case; their reluctance perhaps enables the Sampsons and Enoch Powells (a Prof of Classics) to peddle their own propaganda.
One noatable exception was Alexander von Humboldt of Berlin. His name is largely forgotten now, living on residually in topographical features and the occasional educational esatblishment (including Humboldt University in East Berlin, named in his honour by the socialist regime). A widely travelled explorer and a pioneer of ecology, Humboldt was emphatic on the notion of racial Equality; more importantly, he did not confine this to mere moral pronouncments but made it a core theory of his life's masterwork, THE COSMOS.
One of the great figures of 19th century rationalism, he was aquainted with many great revolutionaries and thinkers of his day, including Bolivar, Garibaldi, Beethoven and Napoleon (not sure if he met Marx, although they were at the same uni...) and seemed destined to be remembered as a kindred spirit. His relative obscruity is undeserved, and may be partly due to his insistence on racial Equality, particularly if academics en masse share the opinions of Prof Sampson...

Here is a statement made by faculty from Social Psychology:
We wish to condemn the statements of Geoffrey Sampson, who, in his
position as a Professor at Sussex University, has publicly justified
racism ('Anger over Tory who sees nothing wrong with racism', The
Guardian, Saturday May 11 2002).
Sampson's justifications, as stated on his website and in the media,
are based on a discredited pseudo-psychology.
(1) Current research and theory in psychology and biology suggests
that there is no genetic basis for 'racial' categories. What counts
as ('racial') similarity or dissimilarity is socially, culturally
and historically constructed.
(2) The use of biological arguments for genetic self-interest to
naturalize and reify supposed preferences for those who are
'similar' to ourselves thereby fails. Moreover, history and
contemporary research is replete with examples of shared commitments
which cannot plausibly be reduced to explanations in terms of
genetic commonalities (as well as group conflicts which cannot
plausibly be explained in terms of 'race', even were there a genetic
basis for this construct).
(3) Research does not support the view that different 'races' have
different average levels of general intelligence. Available research
on IQ differences has not adequately controlled for differences in
environmental circumstances. It remains unclear, therefore, what
factors lead to group differences in IQ scores. Sampson's view does
not reflect evidence-based theory in psychology.
Contrary to Sampson's claims, it is not the mixing of 'different
peoples' that is inherently dangerous, but the use by academics of
arguments which indicate that racism is natural and inevitable.
We the undersigned think that it is deplorable that a University
professor, who is in a position of power among students of different
backgrounds, should be actively involved in the rationalization of
racism. Professor Sampson's views stand in stark contrast to moves
towards widening access to, and ensuring equality of opportunities
within, Higher Education.
Yours sincerely

The Students' Union condemns the racist opinions of Professor Geoffrey Sampson, which are expressed on his website and which have featured prominently in the media within the last week.
The Union believes that racism, sexism and homophobia in all forms should be actively and consistently opposed, and that neither the government nor the University are doing this in an adequate way. Mr Sampson's views could well have an unfair impact on the way that he treats his students, and would clearly make ethnic minority students in his classes feel uncomfortable.
Unfortunately, Mr Sampson is far from being alone in his views.
The rise of far right groups such as the BNP and Le Pen is well documented, but it is worth noting that the Labour government has been little better in its public statements and actions. This government has passed asylum policy which even the UN has condemned as racist, and which Jorg Haider, the Austrian fascist leader, has said his policies are modeled on. In this increasingly pervasive atmosphere of racism, we believe the University must be vigilant about its own members contributing to the rise of racist ideology. This is an ideology which is not just a personal viewpoint, but is actually part of a worldwide movement with a history of justifying and perpetuating slavery, apartheid and death camps. It is not merely an opinion, but an action, and one which promote stereotyping,
discrimination, and ultimately, racial hatred and violence. At such, it is not one that the University can afford to take lightly.
We call on Mr Sampson to retract his statement, and if he cannot bear to do so, to resign. We believe it is entirely detrimental to student welfare to have some students reliant on a professor who deems them to be genetically inferior.
We believe the University's half-hearted 'disassociation' from the views of Mr Sampson are entirely unsatisfactory. Furthermore, we call on the University to work far harder than it has done in the past to ensure racial and other forms of discrimination do not occur. Various complaints of racial discrimination have been made against the University in recent years, many of which have been dealt with entirely inadequately. We find this entirely unacceptable, and call on the University to realize its' responsibility to society and to its' own students on this urgent matter.

Don't boycott the University
15.05.2002 16:44
Pie him during lectures, glue his office shut, drop his files out the window, picket his house, email him huge files to fill his inbox, don't let him give classes, leaflet his neighbours to let them know that a racist pile of shit is stinking up their neighbourhood. Don't beg the university to fire him, fire him yourself by not letting him carry out any of his duties.
Passivity achieves nothing; direct action gets the goods!

Dont want to go there now

No, whatll get them worried is if they realise we dont want to go to their race-hate, scum-show, nastiversity. There are plenty of ex-polytechnics and tech colleges to choose from, so if they want respectable applicants, theyd better make sure they have respectable professors!
